Consumer Reports optimistic about Verizon iPhone

Remember those warm summer days last year when the iPhone 4 was fresh from the Apple tree, and Consumer Reports said it couldn't recommend the smartphone because of the "grip of death" reception issues? Well, now that the Verizon iPhone is hitting the streets, the famous consumer advocacy and product testing group is weighing in on the newest variety of iPhone.

Although Consumer Reports hasn't yet had an opportunity to actually test the Verizon iPhone, The Street is reporting that Senior Editor Mike Gikas says "key technical differences" separate the phone from the AT&T model. Does this mean that Consumer Reports may give the Verizon iPhone a thumbs-up? We'll have to wait to see the results of their detailed testing.

You can watch The Street's interview of Gikas on the next page.

I too just received my Verizon iphone and have had horrible problems with dropped calls. During one call to a land line I had 6 dropped calls. I finally gave up and used a friend's Verizon phone to call tech support (no dropped calls). Of course after talking with them for over 30 minutes there was nothing they could do. I'm torn. I love the device, just not the phone.

The only product consumer reports is interested in is in selling consumer reports.

Wait, they say it's been fixed, even though they never saw one? Sounds like they were paid by someone at Verizon to deride the original.

Consumer report is a joke. I would not be surprised if they took money for their reviews. I have tracked them on several purchase items. They rate a product high, best buy and then in a few years the product stinks. This happens very often especially in cars. I feel I am better at looking at products and making my own judgement. My wife had to have a dishwasher that had their outstanding review. The product is not well made and the dish placement is not spaced to hold things right.

I tried to post this already so this might be a double post... but...

My fiance got her phone yesterday and she is already making calls with her verizon iphone.

The iphone is already jailbroken and she is already using mobile hotspot for her tax business. So how can you claim these things wont be activated til thursday?

Oh the ignorant geeks!

I actually am old enough to read consumer reports and did purchase an Iphone. I waited in anxious anticipation for days on Fedex to deliver the device. I love the ipod and thought an iphone was an excellent idea since it was coming to Verizon, the only carrier strong enough to talk indoors in my area. It is a horrible disappointment as far as radio performance goes. America's most reliable network dropped my call 5 times during the first conversation. More than likely I will return this device to Verizon.

How on earth do you have service with Verizon when they are not going to activate iPhones until Thursday? Your post doesn't make sense, even if it's your idea of sarcasm.

I just received my iPhone for Verizon yesterday and I have had no problems...I didn't get great service with my Droid X in my house and it seemed to have a choppy connection every so often, but not with the iPhone. @mojo...If you were a Verizon customer and pre-ordered the iPhone on February 3rd you were guaranteed to get one on or before February 10th which allowed you to activate the phone whenever you received it. I activated mine yesterday morning with no problems. iPhone + Verizon FTW!!

No one old enough to actually read Consumer Reports is likely to buy an iPhone anyway, regardless of the carrier.

This isn't news.
