iPad cutting board chopped down by Apple

Apple has pulled the plug on a cutting board designed to look like the iPad, according to the board's creator on his blog. Dean Kaplan had a lot of success with his iPhone and iPad stencils, and thought it would be clever to make a cutting board shaped like Apple's magical and revolutionary device. Unfortunately, Apple's lawyers came down on him a few months back, claiming that the wooden board's "likeness" to a certain electronic tablet was a problem. He thinks the whole thing's a little silly (and he's right -- no one's going to confuse a cutting board for an actual iPad), but he's not willing to test the waters with Apple's law sharks swimming around.

Apple has a history of shutting down products like this -- they also shut down the charming little eiPott, an iPod-shaped egg dish from Germany. There's probably more room for products like this than the creators allow Apple to claim, but then again, there's certainly a market for fake Apple devices. After the trouble they've had so far, Apple is probably being overly careful about just where its designs and "likenesses" are used.

@Tom: I think the issue was that Kaplan was selling them as "iPad" cutting boards. If he was selling cutting boards that just happened to look like iPads, then I'd be with him on this. But that's not what he's doing, or did with his stencils and sketchbooks. If he were selling a cutting board shaped like Stewie Griffin and calling it the "Stewie Cutting Board," would we call the (whoever owns Family Guy this week) lawyers evil because they forbid him from selling the boards?

Although, I should qualify that argument with the admission that I wouldn't be suprised if Apple tried to do that to someone who was sellling something that just happened to look like an iproduct. You know, 'cause of likeness and all that.

Um. Are Kaplan's "creative" ideas like his iPhone sketchbook and stencils really that creative when someone came up with the look before him? Or maybe they're creative, they're just not uniquely creative. I get it now.

I can't really fault him for wanting to sell an iPad cutting book or stencils or whatever since I don't think Apple is supplying that demand... but I think Apple can totally fault him for it. SINCE THEY CAME UP WITH IT. Everybody knows that igadgets are not just about their functionality, they're about the appearance as well; an appearance this guy is trying to cash in on. If he's so creative, let him use all his other super creative ideas to make money. Same goes for the egg dish people. It's not like they were selling "cell phone" cutting boards, or "computer" egg dishes, they were selling Apple related stuff. But... like I wrote, though I can't fault them, Apple certainly can.

Sorry. Wrote that before I read the previous comment. Wasn't being plagiaristic on purpose.

"Hi, Apple tech support? I got this iPad, but there's a hole where the home button should be and the screen is stuck on the wood grain background."

Do you think Apple was afraid of too many phone calls like that?

I wonder if the wood came from apple trees?

I can see where Apple is coming from though. I could see my mother calling me up and asking why her iPad screen seems to be stuck on the wood grain iBooks background, only for me to show up and inform her that she's trying to check her email on a cutting board.

Apple is pathetic at times. Do these people ever take a step back from what they're doing?

This is why I love apple products, but at the same time hate apple. They have got to have something better to do with their time.

Those cutting boards also duplicate functionality. Who needs them when you can use your iPad as a cutting board and check your Email or watch some Netflix at the same time.

That's the kind of attitude Sony (SCEA) is trying to emulate. it doesn't seem to be working for them .
