Find my iPad turns up English rugby legend's missing tablet
Former England rugby captain Will Carling has been reunited with his stolen iPad after tracking it down with Apple's free Find My iPhone app. The best part is that he live-tweeted his hunt for the thief.
Carling noticed his iPad was missing after leaving it on a train. He then used Find My iPhone to pinpoint its location and was off. While the chase was no doubt a harrowing experience for Carling, some of his tweets are amusing in hindsight: "breaking news! My Ipad has moved! It is now at the station! This is like Enemy of the State !!"
He eventually pushed a message to the iPad telling its handler that s/he was being tracked, "followed" it (virtually) to a police station and rejoiced at its recovery. Well done.
This isn't the first time we've heard of a successful recovery via Find My iPhone, but it is the first time we've seen the victim live tweet the process.

Nice. Another reason for me to get an iPhone. Every smart phone I have I loose. You are not making it easy for me. Must switch very soon... =P

Japan comes to mind. As much as I love the USA, it's a sad fact that something left in public is generally as good as gone. If the person who turned it in to the police picked it up intending to so do, I give them kudos. Unfortunately, these days it's much more likely that it an iPad would be picked up by someone intending to keep or sell it. I wish people had a little more honor, maturity, and self respect than to take someone else's stuff, but there still are good people in the world. I'll give this guy the benefit of the doubt, but don't assume it couldn't possibly be theft.

Who leaves their iPad on a train Knobhead!!! Stolen not quite but if you found one would you hand it in? I probably would as i know the pain of losing one would be to me!!

Hardly sounds like a case of theft; how does the guy know that they're not already headed to the station police to drop it off. And then he tweets about it as if it's a cat and mouse game. Sounds like a drama queen to me.
Glad he got it back though ...
I, too, recently found my iPhone4 by using Find my iPhone. We tracked it, like super sleuths, walked up to a house, rang the bell, heard the loud noises we set it to do and asked for it. Luckily, they gave it back without incident. These "thieves" did not turn it in where it was lost (in a CVS)! Amazing technology!
February 10 2011 at 1:39 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWow. To be honest I would never push a "you are being tracked" message to my iPhone if it were stolen as I should imagine it would be immediately turned off and then wiped at the thief's earliest convenience.
What I would do is take my 6'5" disgruntled ass down to the blinking dot on my screen and start whoopin'.
Why would you send a message to the "thief", which in essence tells him/her to shut off the ipad/iphone or to switch off the tracking signal?

though it is cool to see the recovery of devices in this manner.
