AT&T highlights $49 iPhone 3GS in new TV ad

AT&T is wielding a new weapon in its fight against Verizon Wireless: the iPhone 3GS. In the carrier's latest advertisement, the almost 20-month old handset and its $49 price tag is dangled in front of customers as a cheap alternative to the iPhone 4. Price-wise, the iPhone 3GS lets customers jump on the iPhone bandwagon for $150 less than the 16 GB iPhone 4 and $250 less than the 32 GB model.

Of course, there is always that nagging monthly cost. Still, if you are going to pay for it anyway and don't need the latest and greatest that Apple has to offer, why not? AT&T is hoping you will think that way so that the carrier can lock you into a contract before Verizon has its own cheap previous generation model to peddle to the masses. AT&T's television advertisement is included in the second half of this post.

Get the goods out while you can... as fast as you can... question is, how long before the 3Gs becomes unsupported like earlier iterations of the iPhone? Could this happen BEFORE the end of a 2 year contract with AT&T? Well... you never know.

Why would they make a new version of a phone that is nearly two years old and is being manufactured at a trickle at best, ready to be killed off when a new one is announced in 5 months?

Yay for competition. Hopefully this will make both AT&T and Verizon be more efficient and offer better deals to us.

Why don't they sell if for $100 with no contract, good way to get rid of the excess inventory which they apparently seem to have.

Haven't they been offering this for awhile now? Anyway, it's a great deal especially if you add kids to your plan. Unless of course theyre spoiled and get a 32GB iPhone4 they day they came out. This deal is only good for new plans or if it's time for an upgrade. Early upgrades are $200, which sucks since I was going to surprise my son that just got his first cell phone (crappy Samsung Propel). Oh well...

If one of the Carriers here in the UK lower the cost of the 3GS to around £20-£50 it would persuade me to finally upgrade from the 3G.

What they don't tell you is that your monthly bill is going to be the same as if you were buying an iPhone 4, so over the 2 years you end up spending so much on your phone bill that the $150 difference seems insignificant. At this point, the 3GS is almost 2 years old anyway, why would you buy a 2 year old phone?

Because some people cant afford to fork out that much money for a brand new 4 right now. $150 over the duration of 2 yrs is a big difference for folks who just want AN iPhone, be it latest or not.
