MLB At Bat 11 apps for iPhone, iPad now available

With the wintry weather that seems to be hitting a lot of the U.S. today, most people probably aren't thinking about the start of the 2011 Major League Baseball season. There are two sure signs of spring today -- the MLB players started playing Spring Training exhibition games today, and the MLB At Bat 11 apps for iPhone/iPod touch and iPad are now available for sale in the App Store.
At this point you'll be able to watch about 150 Spring Training games through a free preview of MLB.TV, and listen to available radio broadcasts of Spring Training games. Like the 2010 version of the app, you can get a close-up batter's view of every at-bat, breaking news, schedules, rosters, and players stats. The description of the app notes that additional features and functionality will be released for Opening Day on March 31.
Major League Baseball apparently didn't listen to user complaints from last year, however. The iPad and iPhone apps are still separate apps, and each costs $14.99. On top of that insult, the league advertises in articles found in the app. Once the MLB season begins, you'll be able to watch one free televised game per day and listen to as many games on Internet radio as you'd like, but there's no way to purchase a package to watch all games for a specific team in the app or beam the games to an Apple TV via AirPlay.
Early reviews on the App Store are saying that the performance of the MLB At Bat 11 app does seem to have improved over last year's iteration, which was notable for slow loading of articles and videos.

February 26 2011 at 3:35 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI get you are try to diss Apple for 30% subscription and have nothing to add to this thread as far as MLB but to answer your question. Yes. Apple does take 30% of this app as it is sold as a new app every year. If they ever bring back the single game purchase then Apple will expect it's cut as well.
MLB.TV is a berderline issue just like NetFlix as it is a service provided as part of a larger service outside of iOS world.
Anyone else having a problem with this app crashing every time you try to watch one of the free spring training games with MLB.tv?
My ipad app crashes to the home screen and my iPhone 4 app just sits there never playing video.
Both are jailbroken.
This is flat out WRONG. I am not a huge baseball fan. Regardless, I sprung $15 to buy the iPad application last season. If you would have told me then that the app I'm paying $15 for would be no good anymore after the season, it would have made an impact on my decision to buy the app.
They no longer have the 2010 version on the app store anymore & are flat out robbing the public with this strategy. It's 100% wrong.
As an iPhone / iPad app developer myself, I can tell you that the correct way of distributing an update is by updating the original application, so that customers who have purchased it get the update at no charge. Especially since I don't see even 1 new feature, how they are ethically doing this is beyond me.
On a secondary note; just like last year, they went even further to list both the iPhone & iPad apps separately. They did this so that users with both iPads and iPhones need to buy the $15 twice, one for each device. They should have made one app which has both iPhone & iPad versions in it, so users pay only 1 price and it runs whichever version is applicable (this is how most dual-platform apps run).
They're complete scum and have lost all respect in my eyes. This nauseates me.
Sal,
If you have cable/satellite tv, don't you pay for the sports packages every season, i.e. NFL Sunday Ticket, MLB Extra Innings, NHL Centre Ice, and NBA League Pass? How is this any different for a mobile device? You can't be serious that you should only pay ONCE and every update every season is FREE. Imagine if that's how it was on the TV. You pay once for the seasona and erach year after that you get it free because you paid once? I don't think so, buddy!
This app includes Gameday Audio, a $20 value. And yes, you have to pay that $20 every year, too. The app is a bargain, if anything.
February 26 2011 at 8:17 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI don't mind the separate charge for the 2 platforms (not least because I don't own an iPad :)). However, I'm not really happy that they're still charging a pretty substantial amount for an app that doesn't provide much more functionality than the free Gameday feature on the MLB web site (and is missing a lot of features that provides) and that they offer no discount to previous purchasers.
February 25 2011 at 11:35 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThey are still missing the boat by not allowing you to pay to watch individual games. I'm not going to pay $100 to watch the whole season when I watch most of it at home, but once in a while I am somewhere and would gladly pay a few bucks. They did this two years ago for a few months, but never went back.
February 25 2011 at 9:24 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyTo be fair, there are NO 3rd party apps that stream video via Airplay right now - it's a 4.3 feature, which is still in developers hands....
February 25 2011 at 6:35 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyDarren - I sure hope you're right. Airplay and MLB At Bat are two of the big reasons for buying a new Apple TV. Hopefully on Wed the 2nd all will be revealed.
February 25 2011 at 9:40 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyUnfortunately, you can't even beam play-by-play audio from this app to AirPlay devices. Hopefully this changes in a future update.
