DirecTV app for iPad debuts
We said it was coming, and DirecTV for iPad has now hit the App Store. The free app is a nice addition to the DirectTV service. The app can be used as a remote, it can schedule DVR recordings, and it has an easily browsable guide for locating your favorite programs and setting preferences for the types of shows you may be interested in. The iPhone has already had a DVR scheduling app from DirecTV.
The remote control part of the app requires a Wi-Fi connection. DVR control can be over Wi-Fi, 3G or the Edge network, if your iPad is so equipped.
Using the app is a pleasure, but I could not load any of the sports features. For some reason the "loading" graphic appeared and spun forever. We've already seen what a great remote the iPad makes for the Sonos audio products, and the DirecTV app follows in that tradition. If you're a US DirecTV subscriber with an iPad, getting this app is a no-brainer. The only thing it's missing is the ability to actually watch DirecTV on it. We're seeing that streaming features begin to appear from cable companies like Comcast. It would be great to see DirecTV offer this as well.

I think it's great that DTV has come out with something that gives its customers more value for what they pay for. At the same time, I think the app is severely inferior to DISH Network's app. For one, it doesn't support streaming yet and it's only a remote. I work and subscribe to DISH Network and I've use the DISH Remote Access app before and I can tell you from experience that it's well worth it. It's compatible with iPhones, iPads, iPod Touches and any Android supported devices. The picture quality is great and you can download the app at no cost in the App Store or Android Market. I love it and I am always recommending that people check out DISH Network and I am inviting anyone who comes across this post to explore the endless possibilities with DISH Network and experience a value unseen by any other TV provider!

I'm not sure what the point of this app is. Do you really want to turn your $500+ device into a glorified remote? I can understand the convenience (at times), but that's not what DirecTV should be doing. As a DISH Network customer and employee I have a similar app (DISH Remote Access), except that my iPad app lets me stream my live TV and DVR recordings to my iPad from wherever I'm at in the world. Simply put, it's amazing and I use it every day. If you're looking for not only the latest technology but the best prices in the industry then I suggest checking DISH out.

If only I didn't already have DISH Network's TV Everywhere app that allows me to watch Live or Recorded TV on my phone, laptop, or tablet. I wish I wasn't so happy and fulfilled as a DISH customer/employee so I could take a huge step backward and get something that was obsolete months before it was released.

You can get rid of any section and add an unlimited number of other sections. Just swipe all the way to the right end and click on the "add" section that appears at the end of your other sections.
@DudeDad: The sports section is working for me today; maybe just a growing pains issue. I agree, it would be nice to have a multiroom playlist on the device; as it stands, I can't use it to start on my bedroom non-DVR box a program recorded on my living room DVR.
How do you connect the DirecTV receiver up to your wireless network? Does the receiver itself have WiFi? Help! I want to use this awesome app

Their rumored app over 8 months ago is still MIA. :(
Not a bad app, but I'd love to get rid of the sports section of the screen and replace it with anything else.

Clicking "playlist" on the bottom, it only shows you that receiver's playlist rather than the multi-room playlist; however, if you call up the remote and click on "playlist", it brings up the mult-room playlist on your TV.
It's quite sleek and very, very responsive. Like the iPhone app, scheduling recordings is much easier than on the TV screen.
I also like how you can "heart" your favorites and view only those in the guide to see what is coming up.
I suspect an upgrade is coming to allow you to stream content to the iPad....I have a Slingbox, but directly streaming from DTV would be nice.
I have been a DirecTV subscriber for 15 or so years. I got the whole-home DVR setup with Internet and only paid the $50 labor charge which is/was required (the tech visit).
They don't tell you this, but you earn points based on subscription length and those points can be used for upgrades. I've done this several times over the years and had enough earned for all the hadware. You have to call; you won't see the free upgrade options via your account on the web site.
I can now secretly change the channel from Nick to something worthwhile when my kids should be doing their homework. Muhahahahaha!!!
