Oddsmakers make book on the iPad 2 event

Just before every Apple event, we get the word from Tony Harvey and the oddsmakers at Bookmaker.com. This time, they've set the odds on what to expect from the iPad 2. While these guys aren't tech pundits -- they're high stakes online sports bookies -- we thought you'd like to see what they came up with in terms of odds on various features for the upcoming iPad.

In each case on the table (click "read more" to see it), the +/- indicates the return on the wager, while the percentage is the likelihood that response will occur. I'm not a betting man, but I indicated my selection by putting it in green on the table. In all cases, I pretty much agreed with the oddsmakers. I did take exception to two of the items listed -- the "slimmer, lighter, and retina display" because I feel that it will be slimmer and lighter, but won't have a retina display, and the "non-smudge screen & gyroscope" because I don't think it will have a non-smudge screen.

We'll find out for sure tomorrow morning at 10 AM PST. Be sure to join the TUAW team for our metaliveblog of the event.

Note: The numbers displayed here are for entertainment purposes only and do not represent an endorsement by TUAW.com that you bet on any Apple event.

One thing you have to realize about bookies is they do not make the odds based on which is more likely to happen, they make the odds based off of the bets that are being made. With the instance of the retina display, a lot of people betting probably don't realize the technical difficulties that would go into having a display with that high of a resolution. They just figure, the iPhone 4 has one so the iPad 2 will get one, thereby raising the payout for people betting against it.

-1500 means you need to bet $1500 to win $100... +500 means you bet $100 to win $500... if you bet $100 on the iPad having cameras and it does, you would get your original bet of $100 back and you would win an extra $6.67

Can someone explain those numbers? So if I wager $100 on the cameras and they have cameras ... I am getting $196 back?

So they are betting agains a camera, against three versions but for a 7" version? .. I don't get it.

Also, nice work of combining things like the gyroscope with a anti-smudge screen .. weird.

Here is a similar story

Those rumors we heard, you know, about an Apple event on Wednesday March 2nd, it turns out that they’re true. Apple is in fact having an event that day, and judging from the invite (above) it will have something to do with the iPad. Given the timing and the amount of rumors/leaks lately it seems safe to assume that in one week’s time we’ll meet the second generation iPad.

We hear the event is scheduled for 1pm Eastern (10am Pacific) on Wednesday of next week at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco.

The new iPad will not be a replacement for the current model. It will be an upgrade. It will have the Retina display, faster processor and more RAM. Storage will start at 32GB, and go to 128GB. 3G models will support GSM and CDMA. It will be released almost immediately with IOS 4.3, and a price between starting at $599. Some surprising new apps will be included on it, including FaceTime of course to make use of the front-facing 720p camera.

Just my opinion of course.

There is no way that the next iPad can have a retina display. This have been discussed a lot in the last 3 months or so.

Glad they stick to sports, because they are idiots when it comes to technology.

I think you'll find tomorrow that they're a lot closer than you think.

Regardless, if I was wrong and couldn't pay up I don't want my knee caps busted in 20 places. :)
