More details on iOS 4.3 compatibility

iOS 4.3 will be making your iOS device even more desirable in just one week's time -- that is, if yours is one of those lucky enough to be compatible with it.
It will work on an iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, but not on an iPhone 3G (so, I guess I may be upgrading sooner than I thought). iOS 4.3 also supports the past two generations of iPod touch and both generations of iPad. Most notably, it won't work on a CDMA Verizon iPhone, which currently runs iOS 4.2.6.

Since I am still rocking a 3G, its now works great as a phone, no longer smart though, some people say it works just like you bought it, actually no it doesn't, with apple recomending me upgrade my OS to something that makes it unoperable... thanks apple, and now my app store has a nice number that says 50 + of my apps need to be upgraded, but I am afraid because last time I updated apps they didn't work because they were optimized for 3gs and up. so I can't even update my apps. but the most alarming thing is that the hack community has been supporting 3G phones longer and better than Apple. That is inexcusable especially for a product that shipped July 2008, This is sort of typical of Apple, just look how they intentionally gimped the first Ipad. I am not a loyal apple fan, as you can tell, but I find Apple has the friendliest technology and I like the whole enclosed ecosystem with airplay. as I have an Imac, gf has macbook, and we will be getting ipad 2. I just hate having to be grouped with manical cult like fanboys who can't even call Apple out on thier missteps. that said , I also like that Apple is an american company (everything is manufactured in China..so what) and california at that. but yeah it was disheartining to see airplay demo'd with a iphone 3g unit and at the last second taken out. boo on you, apple but I keep coming back cause you still are best.

Also, 3.1.3 was the last solid OS for the 3G. My father still uses his and it's not slow compared to 3G phones running 4.0 and later.
You bet I'll be upgrading my hardware... but I've got a contract that runs out around July, which should be just in time to get my hands on whatever supersedes the iPhone 4. As a 3G user, I'm drooling at the prospect.
I'm not going to complain about not being included in the 4.3 upgrade though. Considering most new iOS4 features aren't even available on the 3G anyway (no multitasking, no AirPrint, not even wallpapers!) and performance is like watching your grandfather try to breakdance, I'd be avoiding the update even if it were available to me.
Here too: I just kept 3.1.3 on my 3G. It works fine and I don't miss anything worthwhile by not having 4.x on it.
My iPhone 3G is falling apart, quite literally (volume button's gone missing) but it works. After two years my contract with T-Mobile NL was up and I could've upgraded to the iPhone 4.
However, T-Mob's network is abysmal and it'd cost me another 240 euros (335 dollars!) for the phone under an expensive new two year contract. No thanks.
So, sticking with the 3G and I went sim only on a good provider.
Yeah, so older devices can't run newer software. That's to be expected. My old PowerMac G5 couldn't upgrade to Snow Leopard, my sister's old iMac can't run Sims 3, my old PC wouldn't have been able to upgrade to Vista or 7 had I kept it, my PC before that couldn't possibly run XP...
Besides, I bought my iPhone 3G based on what it could do at the time. Any features and abilities it may have gained since then are just a bonus. I'm still happy with it, and I probably won't be replacing it for a while.
It's a bit of a misnomer for Apple to refer to the AT&T iPhone as a 'GSM iPhone'. To give you an example, here in New Zealand one of our two main networks is purely WCDMA (3G). Not a shred of 2G GSM technology is to be found on the network, but it is of course completely compatible with the "GSM" iPhone4.

Technically, it's running a version of iOS, but it serves a completely different function, has a different UI, and runs on entirely different hardware. The original Apple TV was running OS X, technically, but not the same way a computer does.
Apple TV is only running 4.1.1, anyway.
So will the Verizon iPad 2 run iOS 4.3 or only iOS 4.2.x until the Verizon iPhone 4 is upgraded?
March 04 2011 at 3:09 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI would assume the CDMA iPad 2 will launch with 4.3. I don't understand why the two iPhone forks haven't been merged yet, but I'm sure they will be with iOS 5.

March 04 2011 at 2:29 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe writer says: "so, I guess I may be upgrading sooner than I thought"
He is falling into the hypnotic mindset of "OMG - the latest OS won't work on my device - I'd better upgrade and buy another one."
I'm all for individual choice. Such behavior is, however, so reactive that it is scarily automatic - just like a programmed robot that can't think independently.
It is as if the writer has been programmed to automatically upgrade just because the latest OS won't work on his gadget. I'm sure Apple love him because he perpetuates a mindset of acting without thinking, which gets them more profit.
The wastefulness in the U.S. is staggering. The rare minerals used in the antennae in phones, tablets, and computers is being mined in Africa at great profit by multinational companies, yet it's also destroying the habitat of species that are close to extinction.
For heaven's sake people - upgrade because your life and other peoples' are significantly improved as a result of the upgrade - not just because Apple is chucking out another version of the OS. Let's reduce waste - not increase it - and think before we buy.
Not a big deal for me since I'm planning to upgrade my iPhone 3g to an iPhone 5 if they offer LTE.
But if they don't have LTE, I'm moving to an Android device.
Have fun with Android. Enjoy those OS updates months after they're released by Google.
March 04 2011 at 3:13 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHave fun with that. Android 2.3, is great! So I hear. My Droid still hasn't gotten it yet, even though it's been out for 3 months. I might never get it, even though my Droid is newer than the 3Gs (which is entitled to this iOS update).
I bought an iPhone 4, and now I'm finally happy.
