Rumor: Apple to hold iOS 5 and MobileMe media event in April

ios 5 event rumorGerman Apple site Macerkopf.de is claiming via a "trusted source" that Apple is set to hold a media event sometime during the first two weeks of April in which Apple will preview iOS 5 and also launch a revamped MobileMe service. The site offers no details on the features of iOS 5 or what the MobileMe revamp might entail, but it is not unreasonable to assume Apple would be holding such an event in the near future to prep developers for the next release of iOS, which presumably will be released with the iPhone 5 in the summer.

For those of you wondering if you should wait until the release of iOS 5 to buy a new iPad 2, which ships this Friday, don't bother. Apple has stated in the past that all iPad owners are entitled to one free iOS upgrade. It will, however, be interesting to see whether Apple plans to charge original iPad owners (who already got their free upgrade with iOS 4.2) for the iOS 5 upgrade.

Macerkopf.de's original posting about the iOS 5 event can be read in English (via Google Translate) here.

I expect this from the blog giants Giz/engadget/etc but not the baby o the bunch TUAW. Mention people spending money they don't want to spend and you generate a lot of page clicks. I still like you TUAW, but tread lightly if this is the revenue direction you are going.

They have to charge because of some accounting rule. You can find more about it if you look up the question in regards to the iPod touch.

I thought they figured out how to offer free upgrades to people who weren't on the iPhone.

Read here, TUAW post lies again!!

"Free iOS Updates
Your iPad gets better with every iOS update, free for all iPad owners. Just connect your iPad to your Mac or PC, open iTunes, and follow the instructions to download the update."

I pulled that off of http://www.apple.com/ipad/ios4/ scroll to the bottom, on the left side.

Since mobileme calendar is going to be updated for all users on May 5 having a mobile me event toward the end of April would make sense.

It was in the past but within the last year I believe changes were made in the law that fixes this. But I'm not 100% sure. I know Steve mentioned it in a keynote.

This was why they had to in the past:
The answer has to do with U.S. accounting and financial regulations.

Maybe this means WWDC is going to actually be about OS X again? For the past few years, WWDC was about iOS. By separating iOS from WWDC, it would mean they finally want to talk about the Mac OS again in June.

This "story" isn't sustained by anything credible, and it doesn't contain any credible data. Why was it posted?

Ordinarily I don't criticize TUAW's choices of posts, but this one was just goofy.

Charge for upgrades? I've never heard anything about that.

Apple previously charged for iOS upgrades on the iPod touch, but they stopped doing that a while ago.. I seriously doubt they'd suddenly start charging for iOS upgrades for iPads now. However, I do believe I read somewhere that they only _guarantee_ one free upgrade for all iOS products. (They probably wanna make sure they're able to change their minds without a lawsuit.. Hah!)

It has been a while. Where are all those people who claimed Apple "legally" has to charge for updates now? LOL

Surprised..? They've shipped a new version each summer since the launch of the original iPhone.. A ninth point upgrade isn't what'll trigger the launch of a new version of an OS, but the number of core changes / new features does..
