Apple exchanges iPads for iPad 2 for Rutgers class

An Apple retail store in New Jersey has taken back an order of original iPads and replaced them with iPad 2 units for a class at Rutgers' Center for Management Development, according to Forbes. In a move bound to annoy everyone who bought an iPad just before the iPad 2 was released and found that it was too late to return it, Apple isn't even charging a restocking fee even though the iPads had already been customized.
The class was scheduled to start shortly before the iPad 2's release date on March 11, so the school had gone ahead and purchased the tablets (the students actually pay for them and keep them after the class is over). The article doesn't say exactly how this deal was arranged, but it's safe to say that someone at Rutgers followed my mom's perennial advice, "If you don't ask, the answer is no," and made a phone call to the local Apple Store. From the article, it is clear that Rutgers has a regular cycle of classes that use the iPads, which no doubt made it a little easier for Apple to show such extra flexibility.
Of course, no good deed goes unpunished, so I'm sure there will be a whole host of people complaining that they didn't get the same offer. If you did happen to order an iPad recently, it's definitely worth a visit to your local Apple Store or a polite call to Apple support. Just remember, you're not a university sending tens of thousands of recurring dollars to Apple, so don't be too surprised if you don't get the same deal.

Apple has a 2 week return policy. This is not news. I worked there for 5 years and we never charged the stated restocking fee when the customer was doing an exchange. No where in this article does it claim they bought these more than 2 weeks before the announcement. So, yeah, if you didn't know that already, take your iPad back. If you bought yours 2 months ago, forget about it.

As an aside, the Apple employee said that they would offer a swap to an iPad 2 of similar spec for customers that had bought an iPad within a month of the release of the iPad 2. However, as I originally purchased my iPad on 19th Feb this wouldn't have worked for me with a UK release date of 25th March for the iPad2.
When you find yourself in a situation like this, ask the supplier if you can upgrade or even get a rebate as a discount.
If they still say no, just remember, when you bought the original device, you new what it could do and it suited your needs. It isn't obsolete yet, just superseded.
If you still feel hard-done-by, you should sell your original device second-hand and buy the revised one. You still have the original box, don't you?
As we say up north in the UK
"Shy bairns get nowt"
If you are a consumer buying any type of technological product, you have an obligation to research the company and their product, warranties and return policies before making a purchase. Apple's policy for return and no restocking fee is great compared to other firms that sell their products I don't think they don't need to advertise their policies. If anyone failed to miss their window of opportunity, it was their responsibility to review it, not Apples. It's not an offer, its their standard whether the purchaser is an individual or an institution. I bought a 64 GB 3GS right before Christmas and love it just as much.

People would usually find out, this way or another, if there is an upcoming new model of a certain product you want to buy. Sure, you will not get a 100% answer of yes/no but it might make you decide in a smarter way....
