iMovie and Garageband now available for iPad

As expected, iMovie and GarageBand are now available on the App Store for the iPad 2 when it releases later on this week. iMovie is actually just a universal update, since the app was already available for the iPhone, but it won't run on the original iPad (GarageBand will, however). Both apps are available for $4.99. Note that the GB download is pretty big -- GarageBand will run you 370 MB, so if your iPad is already pretty full, you'll have to delete some apps or media.

GarageBand offers up all of those great in-app instruments to record with, so if you have an iPad 1 or 2, it's probably a must-get. iMovie's improvements for iPhone users have yet to be tested, but it's bound to be a big hit tomorrow once the iPad 2 units hit the street.

GarageBand is working great, it wont power a USB MIDI keyboard itself, but if you use a power supply for your keyboard it works great, with pretty low latency (lag). Just a shame I cant use my Rock Band 3 keyboard with it too (as that uses a regular MIDI interface)

Its a bargain, and very capable, I think the guy who commented that they were disappointed because there were other apps that do guitar or synth emulation is missing the point that this DOES IT ALL TOGETHER.

I'm not a big fan of the smart instruments myself, as I prefer to play the parts myself, but if it gets people into this who otherwise wouldn't have, then fine.

Everything this app does (8 track recorder, sequencer, sampler and synthesisers) literally cost me well over £5000 back in the 80s, and now its all there for £2.99. There's progress for you!

Found that the M-Audio Producer USB mic that comes with Avid Vocal Studio/Pro Tools Vocal Studio works pretty good with Garageband on the iPad with the camera connection kit's USB part and doesn't seem to draw too much power .

On the Mac, it needs drivers to be used. Avid Vocal Studio-by the way, is aimed at consumers that want a nice USB mic (and a cut-down version of Pro Tools), and is under $150 .

Just a word of warning to those who would like to use iMovie in other languages other than English:
It doesn't work!!
At least if you plan to create a movie longer that 59 seconds.
This was a well know bug on iMovie 1.1 that unfortunately Apple didn't fix in this new version.

Just for the records:
I'm using a non JB iPhone 4 with iOS 4.3

Just a tip to the author: I wouldn't use the abbreviation of GarageBand, which happens to be "GB", in a sentence that explains the size of something. It can be confusing... "Note that the gigabyte download is pretty big--GarageBand will run you 370MB." whaa?

Sorry dear TUAW,

but GarageBand is after all that hype a big letdown. More for non-musicians as a toy to pretend to play music, not much compared to the already existing music apps. I have expected more from Apple since they have so much capable engineers.

Also, why couldn't a person use screenshots and do a slideshow with them? Or, use videos or photos off their computer?

Windows users don't have access to iMovie, so if they have an iPad 1, they could make use of it for the first time.

I hope Apple fixes this oversight.

Because it's still useful to edit movies you created with your iPhone or transferred via your computer.

Pretty shortsighted on Apple's part.

So far this is the only disappointment:
"Songs created in GarageBand for iPad can not be opened in GarageBand for Mac...A future update of GarageBand for Mac will open songs created in GarageBand for iPad." This will slow down those who were thinking of using it as a scratchpad for Logic...at least for now. :)

But at least the update should be coming. It's a shame iMovie isn't cross-comaptible like that and apparently never will be.

Seriously Apple?! Is it too difficult to have GarageBand for iPad work with GarageBand for Mac? Same with iMovie. The whole POINT of having GarageBand and iMovie for the iPad is to work on something on-the-go then bring it into the Mac for polish. If they are not going to be compatible then do not give them the same name. Call them something completely different to differentiate them.

I've the first to defend Apple and say they make things that "just work" but this is getting ridiculous.

Quit being lazy Apple and get these things to work together like they should.

Does anybody know if a MIDI keyboard will work in garageband with the camera connection kit?

I just tried to plug my key board in and got a pop up message:

Accessory Unavailable
The attached accessory uses too much power.

So sounds like it might work. I don't have a power supply for this keyboard to test if it's own source would allow it to work. If I find one, I'll be sure to post.

I did plug my guitar in with a GuitarPlug ( DVForge) -> USB Camera Connection Kit and it works great. I have not figured out how to hear myself playing with the amps, but it does playback what I recorded. This will be cool to just jam out some ideas quickly.

It also works with the Griffin Guitar Connection cable. That allowed me to plug in headphones and hear what I was playing too.

The description for the app states right at the beginning that it requires an iPhone 4, iPad 2, or iPod 4. Those are the only devices with front-facing cameras, which is listed as a requirement.

it's dumb though that it's a requirement since you could just use your photo library on the ipad 1 to make a movie. oh well. there are other movie apps out there like ReelDirector for ipad 1 and it's only a matter of time before I upgrade or hold out on ipad 3.
