Fox affiliate in Texas shoots news story on iPad

With St. Patrick's Day just around the corner, Fox affiliate KBTV's Mike McNeill stopped by Spec's Liquor Store in Beaumont, Texas, to discuss the various alcoholic options available for properly (and responsibly) celebrating the holiday. In the video, McNeill claims he shot the entire report using only the camera in his new iPad 2.
"All the experts who know how to shoot these kind of stories are out on real stories," says McNeill in his report. "So, I just grabbed my iPad 2 and decided hey, you know what, we're Fox 4, we're innovators." Moments later, McNeill points the camera at his iPad 2 box as evidence that he's using Apple's new tablet to shoot the story.
This is the first known broadcast created using an iPad 2. Keep reading to see the video.

Definitely. This could have been a cool way to showcase some flexibility and innovation if used on the right story.
Dinking around in a liquor store, while fun, probably isn't the best way to show off your work.

This isn't a big deal. It's not a game changer. And it won't change the world of TV journalism.
But it's fun, and good on him for trying something different.
Perhaps not this. But how about the guy that was driving by and got iphone 4 footage of a gas explosion, edited it on his ipad and it ended up picked up by CNN.
Street Journalism could be the way of the future and these could finally be the tools to make it happen on video. A step up from the tweeting, emailing etc of events.
Expect to see more YouTube videos shot with an iPod2 on a supermarket shopping cart! :))

The quality looks really good, and there is no intimidating 30 pound Sony or Ikegami camcorder to stick into people's faces for a cheesy interview. Think of the money the TV station could save by having reporters do their own camerawork. "Look into my iPad 2 and tell us why you shot the bastard!" "Aw, look at the little puppy trapped in the sewer pipe... let me move in a little closer."
Get the picture?
Since it's supposedly live, my guess is it's the front-facing camera and he's broadcasting using FaceTime (and the liquor store's WiFi?). If so, that's possibly another story right there. Just a thought.

could could alone handle (1) performing the segment, (2) capturing the
segment and (3) editing the segment (now that iMovie is available
through App Store for iPad2) and (4) transmit the final clip to the home base.
As insignificant as this may be to folks who don't like to accept that
technology is rapidly evolving, this is indeed ground breaking.

With Apple's FaceTime, and an iPhone or another Mac (laptop or desktop), you could make the iPad2 into a "NannyCam" and check out the babysitter from another room or another location! Hey, you could just rest your iPad2 on your desk at the factory and check on your workers while you step awayâand no one would be the wiser.
Better be careful what we say or do now, Big Brother is here and all we have to fear will be the robots!
OMG fox news internets get the pitchforks. Disapointed he didn't at least do some practice runs before he went "live". The low resolution made it hard to really see what kind of quality image was produced but I was impressed at how wel the device handled the lighting transitions. Unimpressive video but the components of the situation very max headroomish.

This is nothing new, and frankly, it's easily apparent as to why things like this have limited appeal. Blogs have not replaced newspapers. In fact, blogs usually just repost what newspapers have already reported on. Which is fine. Same thing will happen withs tv news and vlogs. The iPad 2 is changing nothing. Sorry.
March 16 2011 at 10:29 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyDana, the video looks better than I thought it would if the guy is using the screen side camera. Do we know or can we presume it was the 720p backside one? One reason this piece is relevant in TUAW is for those who haven't seen actual video from both. Here we have it as loaded up to YouTube. Not buying it for that, but nice to know it's not too bad.
March 16 2011 at 7:45 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyNot sure which of the iPad 2's cameras was used to shoot the story. Since the report appears to have been shot in one really long take and the reporter seems reasonably capable of keeping himself (mostly) in frame, I would guess he used the front-facing camera.
Or maybe he practiced a bunch before heading out into the field or used a mirror...
Dana Franklin, I agree with you mostly, but after looking again, the quality seems that of the rear facing camera, plus, he didn't have the guest's face in a shot when talking to him, and he would have moved it over a bit to include his guest's face if he could see the live preview (My best guess).

Like the footages that begin to emerge from the tragic earthquake in Japan. So many raw footages from ground zero to truly show the devastation and sheer force that caused the destruction.
