Time Warner's iPad TV service cut back due to overwhelming demand

Earlier this week, Time Warner Cable released its new iPad app, which allowed users to watch live TV on the device if they met certain key conditions. The app only works when connected to residential networks that are connected to TWC's RoadRunner cable modem ISP service, or the parallel Earthlink service delivered by TWC, and users have to subscribe to a base tier of cable TV service as well.

Who knew live TV would be so popular? Apparently the service has already been overwhelmed with demand. Customers couldn't log in yesterday due to the drain on the authentication servers, and Time Warner has had to cut back the number of channels available to watch from 30 to just 15. Keep in mind, this is a huge amount of demand from the relatively small audience covered by the restrictions above. But apparently that was enough -- even with just those users, the service was completely overrun.

That hasn't stopped Time Warner from promising improvements, however -- the company still says it plans to add even more than the 30 channels that were supposed to be available at launch, and the service is expected to turn into a Slingbox-style solution, with Time Warner subscribers able to watch television from anywhere. Those days may be a little while off yet, though. Obviously, any setup like that will clearly require a large and dedicated infrastructure to run well.

Be cool if you could access On Demand then take them with you for viewing later, but I don't have an Ipad, just thought about what would be neat...

While I understand that this is an exciting release for TWC, it seems they might have bitten off more than they could chew. While they are struggling to keep service for only 15 channels, only in customer's homes, without DVR management capability, DISH Network and the REAL TV Everywhere is up and running strong!!! My account with DISH has over 250 channels and, with my Sling Adapter for the 722 receiver, I can watch ALL of my channels live. It also lets me manage and view DVR content, and watch thousands of titles on-demand! AND I can do so anywhere my 3G Android has service. Which is just about everywhere!!! If you're not in the mood to wait for Time Warner, check out my employer and provider at Dish.com/TVEverywhere!!

It's unfair of me, but I had a bad feeling about the Time Warner app the moment I opened their email promoting it -- an email whose large, display-type headline described it as "The App that let's you watch live TV from anywhere in your home."

I recognize that many intelligent people are blind to spelling and usage errors, but Time Warner has thousands of employees. If they can't be bothered to do QA on an email they send to every subscriber in New York City, they probably can't be bothered to do it on their software, either.

Gee a brand new service/product not working exactly the way it was intended right off the bat? Who would have thunk it?!

Of course if this was Apple's service, people would have been like "Awesome! Apple must have a huge hit on their hands if they can't serve everybody!" When other companies drop the ball, they get the FAIL; when Apple does it, people give it a pass and say wait for the next version.

Food for thought: unless you want to be a beta tester for a new product or service, don't use it right away after it's introduced.

Tuesday I had it working, but Wednesday it said I didn't meet the requirements. I don't think I do meet the requirements because I have the most minimal cable package available. Using the app, I was able to view channels that I don't currently pay for, so either TW goofed, or they just decided to give everyone a taste of the service until they realized their servers couldn't handle it.

Worked just fine all day yesterday for me in North Carolina. My wife had it playing in the kitchen while she made dinner without problem. Maybe it is just isolated to a certain part of the country.

Makin' me nuts.

Last night, none of the channels would play. Today, I get a prompt saying that I have to be accessing the service via a Time Warner cable modem.... WHICH I AM.

What a suckfest!

Less channels, resource limitations, problems connecting and remaining connected? Sounds like a normal day with Time Warner Cable in NYC. the only thing different or new is the addition of the iPad.

Given Time Warner Cable's already less-than-stellar performance in Los Angeles, I am really unsurprised that this blew up in their faces. Another swell effort there, TWC!

They just didn't do any system stress testing. They thought one server was enough.
