Pricey iPad 2s showing up in online auctions

The "amazing" demand for the iPad 2 is creating a booming resellers market for those looking to flip their iPad 2. While iPad 2 units are impossible to find in stores, the internet is teeming with iPad 2s for those willing to pay any price. The 64 GB Wi-Fi + 3G model is the top of the line iPad 2 model and retails for US$829 online and in stores. A quick search of eBay uncovers auctions selling this model with a price tag as high as $4,000. While $4K may be on the high end of the scale, many units have sold for as much as $2000. This same model is also selling for between $1000 to $1500 on Craigslist in major metropolitan areas such as New York City.

Even the low-end 16 GB Wi-Fi iPad 2 model is available at over-inflated prices with some sellers asking $2000 for the $499 tablet device on eBay and up to $1000 on Craigslist. If you did not score an iPad 2 on day one and still want one, what are you doing to secure your tablet device? Would you pay $1000 plus for the iPad 2, or do you prefer to stalk your local Apple store waiting for that elusive shipment of new iPad 2 inventory?

... ridiculous.

I understand supply and demand but that is too much. It's not like it's an out of print book. It's technology that becomes obsolete within a year or 3.

Silly rich Folk, You should give your money to me.

Also did anyone catch that the person selling the $4000 ipad2 lost his job?
:( Sad that our economy has become so bad.. Darn Bush administration.
We should raise taxes and lower product prices to fix it ( taxes go to government, which improves our way of life and economy- product prices go to private companies who don't want to be taxed because they are rich).

"You deprived five people of their opportunity to get an iPad 2 at the manufacturer's retail price so that you could make a profit. You PURPOSELY used your money and time to inconvenience and financially harm other people..."

ARE YOU SERIOUS!!!!! financially harm other people! Wake up. We are talking about Ipads, right? Depriving people of an opportunity to get an ipad...that's too funny... again we're talking about Ipads, right? not health care, education, etc... Ipads right?

Buying or not buying an Ipad at that price is not going to be a life altering decision as you make it out to be. Hey if they can afford it (which they obviously can) then why shouldn't they be able to buy it. It was their choice; pay the $1500 or don't, nobody was holding a gun to their head to buy at that price, it's being offered and people are buying. And im sure if they're paying 1500 for an ipad, it's not going to be the financial burden on them. I took the chance at buying 5 and if I couldn't sell them oh well It was my decision so I would be left with 5 ipads, I was willing to make that gamble.

You're talking about these Ipads as if they're food, water, medicine, etc... so what if the supply is depleted...life will go on and still does. Like most people, we'll wait until the demand meets with the supply. Im sure nobodys life was changed or ended because they couldn't get an ipad 2. Why shouldn't people be able to profit from things like this? isn't that the american way? So many people profit from much worse things like other peoples insecurities, weight problems, etc... all of which are way worse than buying and selling ipads to people who can afford to buy at a higher price. Get your head out of the clouds, you've never made a profit on anything you've sold? Doubt it.

Again......
"deprived five people of their opportunity to get an iPad 2 at the manufacturer's retail price so that you could make a profit. You PURPOSELY used your money and time to inconvenience and financially harm other people.

Please tell me you were joking when you made the above statement? OMG I deprived people of the opportunity to get an Ipad 2 at the manufacturer's retail price!!! Again, we're talking about Ipads, right? not food, medicine, water, right to vote, etc.....Ipads, right?? Im surely going to rot in hell for this evil deed that has so changed the financial world.

Good arguments. I could - if I thought you were listening - point out that you are making some rather blanket assumptions about what people may have had planned for the iPads your cavalier practices denied them, but I can tell you are certain your $5000 outweighs 5-10 months of other folks productivity. With that as the premise for your practice, I have to concede your cleverness and resourcefulness.

You're still a selfish jerk, though. Right? :-)

I purchased 5 iPads at $499, total $2500. Then sold them all on eBay for $1500 each ( total of $7500) for a great profit of $5000!!! Now why wouldn't you do that? Oh wait you probably can't afford to buy 5 iPads. Youre honestly telling me you wouldn't jump at the opportunity to make $5K? And don't blabber about morals, it's not like anyone is selling drugs to schoolkids, or secrets to n Korea. Youre lying if you say you wouldn't jump at a chance to make $5000. Give me a break this isn't that big of a deal all the whiners are jealous of the money others are making.

Yeah. I have a problem with that. It pretty much makes you an opportunistic a██hole.

No, I wouldn't do it, and I didn't do it despite being third in line. Just because you have no scruples and don't feel like a giant ass doesn't mean you can justify your warped greed and lack of scruples by insisting that everyone else is just as much of an opportunistic jerk as you are.

I got my iPad 2 on launch day. Other people weren't so lucky. The fact that you are proud that you depleted the supply with the intention of artificially driving up the price for your own benefit, with no concern for how this affected other people tells me everything I need to know about you, and that you'd be the last person I'd want to do business with. Personally, I think you're slime.

You're a jerk. Enjoy your money. It won't make you any less of an a██hole.

With regards to the price being 2,000 or 4,000 online. The market will correct for this as supply increases, and it becomes less profitable for the scalper to continue to sell the product at such high markups. Once again, Apple created this mess by selling iPads for much too low, and having far too little supply available.

Bad Apple for providing a great product at a great price!

Scalpers are only doing what Apple should have done. Prices should be rising because supply is so low. This really doesn't take brain science to figure out.

So you think that it is cool for Apple to punish those that want it now with a higher price.

As someone that was lucky enough to get one right away I'm thankful that Apple doesn't agree

Not a contact lens wearer, are you?

Some people NEED a finger in their eye every day, in order to see properly.

I beg you PLEASE don't pay the inflated prices these muffin heads are charging. I recently heard a tale of a pack of dolts trying to order from PC Connection to sell them for 2000+ each. LOL Of course they can't get them because they are stupid and believe Apple is shipping stock to PC Connection before to Apple Stores.

Anyway, just let these people drop their prices, or keep their stuff.

I don't see the negativity of comments towards those buying iPads and then reselling them.

There's not a gun to your head saying you have to buy. Just because I got up early, ordered one, and then I decide exercise some restraint and decide to sell it for more to some person that has to have an iPad right this moment. Now I am a bad person? Whatever.

Why is it that there's always a couple of people who feel the need to defend scalpers like it's somehow a noble action?

It's the ultimate in remorseless capitalism, and for some people that is an admirable aspiration. Decency be damned.
