Apple approves "gay cure" app, then removes it on 3/22

rainbow apple

Update: The app has been removed from the store as of 3/22, per CoM.

Today, everyone has their knickers in a twist over yet another controversial app that Apple allowed into the App Store. According to the Register, an application that helps customers discover "freedom from homosexuality" can be purchased from Apple's iTunes-based store. Activist organization Truth Wins Out has a petition asking Apple to remove the app.

Rather than to go into details or express any opinions, TUAW prefers to point back to TJ Luoma's excellent post from a few months ago that says everything there really needs to be said on the topic.

TUAW contacted Apple for a statement and will update the post in the event that we receive a reply.

Please feel free to discuss Apple, censorship, and App Store in the comment thread for this post. Posts that discuss other posters, the morality of the application in question, or any issues of lifestyle choice or biological imperative may result in your comments being deleted and you being banned from this site.

I would guess that Apple is trying to walk a fine line between something that is offensive and legally permissable.

In a way they are damned if they do or don't!

Even if it is allowed to remain nothing prevents anyone from speaking out against it and the developer.

This isn't really a lifestyle/morality issue. It's a censorship issue. I don't approve of Apple censoring ANY app. If people don't want to download it, they don't have to.

I thought the idea of the shaken baby app was awful. Past that, I didn't download it, so it wasn't relevant to me any more.

People get way too offended, way, way too easily. I was a child abuse neglect social worker, so I have some idea of the kinds of things worth getting bent out of shape about. This is most certainly not one.

For the record, I'm a Christian who loves my family and friends who are Gay, Lesbian, Bi, etc. and has no problem with loving relationships of any kind between consenting adults.

If you disagree or do not like an app, you don't have to download it. There are many apps out there I will not have anything to do with. But I am glad the option is there. The fact is, I would much rather have the choice than no choice at all.

People fail to realize that often the choice isn't between having a gay loved one or not having a gay loved one, it's between having a gay loved one and having a dead loved one. There's no such thing as a gay "cure", and "reparative" and religious organizations such as Exodus promote programs that often end in suicides. It's very sad and likely it not a claim that can be made about other apps available on Apple app store.

Now the wikileaks app for example was removed while this was not...
I wonder how objective this is...
I hope things will be cleared out soon and apple realizes that such an offending "to a fair portion of human beings" app does not belong to the AppStore unless many others that got deleted are accepted back... :)

Was my comment politically correct and respectful enough to be kept on this article?
I tried my best you know :)

I'm a gay man that doesn't want to see ANY censorship in then app store. The solution to this is more free speech - not less.

This app should never have been approved. It is not just expressing an opinion, they are doing great psychological harm to people who are struggling with their sexuality. The American Psychological Association does not view being gay as a "disorder" and says that trying to "cure" or "convert" people is wrong. Maybe straight people don't see "in-your-face" offensiveness, but gay people do!! Would Apple approve an app that viewed Jews or Muslims as having a "disorder" needing a "cure?" NO.

I'm sure (or at least hope) that Apple made another mistake in its app store similar to the infamous "shaking baby" app. If not I think it's a bit hypocritical if Apple keeps this app in the store after banning simple satire apps in the past. If one can't poke fun at political figures in the App Store one shouldn't be able to label a group of people as needing a cure from who they are. It's just awful.

I hope this following comment isn't against the rules...
-----Just to be clear, I am not against anyone's lifestyle.

Anyways, I haven't seen this app yet, and I won't. But isn't what's being said sort of hypocritical?
I am not sure if this application would fall into freedom of speech, as I said, I didn't look at what's inside this app. But if it includes things that are available in other areas in the internet/bookstores then I guess there is no harm of it being in the App Store.
If it's not being shoved into people's faces, then it could be helpful for some people who feel like they need this.
I don't know what it feels like if someone is believing in being freed from homosexuality like this app suggests, but I guess one has the right to do what he/she pleases.
For example, if one person has been recognizing him/herself as a homosexual, and one day he/she decides to become a hetro/bi-sexual. No one should stop them, just like no one should force someone into being someone they are not.
No one should be forced to "switch teams", no matter if it is for religious, psychological, moral, mental or pure sexual!
Having the resources (as that app claims to be) is just another gateway to what they say they offer, it's not the only one. If someone is truly trying to "switch", then they should do so... Without being forced.
Just like if someone feels like going out of the closet should, as long as no one if forcing anyone, this app should be harmless.

There's no reason it should be banned other than in-your-face offensiveness. Last time I checked, just because you don't agree with something isn't a reason to censor content according to the First Amendment of the Constitution.
Don't buy/download it if you don't agree with it. You don't go to websites that you don't agree with, do you?

The first amendment applies to government, not businesses.
