Final Fantasy III hits the App Store

As promised, Square Enix released its version of Final Fantasy III for the iPhone and iPod touch. The role-playing game follows the journey of four orphaned youths chosen by the crystal of light to restore balance to the world after the land is robbed of light. This version is a remake of the Japanese Final Fantasy III that debuted on the Nintendo DS in 2006.

It has been optimized for the iPhone 4 and iPod touch and includes Retina Display support, iPhone-specific touch panel controls and new 3D visuals and story sequences for the iOS platform. Final Fantasy III is now available on the App Store for US$15.99. For fans of the series, the original Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II are on sale on the App Store for $3.99 each until March 31.

Loving this game so far. It looks amazing on the retina display, and the new touch controls work really well. I do wish during battles they let the menu options be on the right instead of the left, but that's minor.

And if I gotta do something I just hit the home button and can go back to it later.

Does it multitask? They never updated FFI and FFII to have multi-tasking, AFAIK, and I'm not paying for either until they do. It's not like these are quick, "play for 2 minute" kind of games, and it's frustrating as hell to make a lot of progress, then get a text message or have your phone ring and lose it all.

If they want to charge premiums like that for the platform, they need to learn how to program for it.

Haha Ben, I think we got the gist of what you were trying to say. Having said that, SE is really pushing their luck in market that has gotten used to low priced games and volume discounting. It will be fun to see wether your typical casual user will be willing to pay premium for a higher quality game.

It would be nice if SE found a way to port this to iPad at the same time as Touch and Phone.

Oh, come on, it's worth it. And if you don't like the price, don't buy it. I remember when Street Fighter II Alpha, an upgrade to the already excellent Street Fighter II, came out for like $70 for the SNES. Some people will want these games, and others can wait for a sale or not get them at all.

I had this for DS, which cost somewhere in the mid $30 range. It was worth the price I believe, but the app store has taught us to expect things

Is this any better on the iPad than I+II? I find it pretty ridiculous that they only work with scaling. It can't be that much work for them to give full iPad support, when the games have been done on consoles.

SE has a well-known habit of putting all their games on sale when they release a new one. For example, I used this as an opportunity to pick of Secret of Mana for $4 (usually $9), which was just released in December. SE's original iOS game, Chaos Rings, is usually priced at $13 and has been lowered to $6 during these sales. My plan for FF3 is to watch it on App Shopper and pick it up when it, too, goes on sale (which shouldn't be that far away -- Final Fantasy Tactics is due soon, and Chrono Trigger is coming sometime in the spring as well).

It is a high price, but as far as I've seen it's been done really well, and it's easy enough just to wait for the inevitable sale.

I think that's a great strategy to follow.
I have always loved SE's games, but anything over then $10 makes me cringe.. so great to know that the drop prices once something new comes out. Might have to use this launch to pick up Chaos Rings :)

any word on if they are integrating GameCenter into their ports?

What an insane price for a game that old... even for a ported one. Completely from scratch designed Indie games are cheaper than that :(

Yeah, with it already having retina support, why not just include iPad and be done with it. Kind of sucks they don't release these games for iPad, I'd love to play Secret Of Mana too but scaling is such a bother.
