New iPhone ad features Game Center

Apple released another "If you don't have an iPhone" advertisement that promotes Game Center on the iOS platform. The short, but sweet video introduces the iPhone as the smartphone with the largest number of games and a built-in social network for gaming. Introduced with iOS 4.0, Game Center sets Apple apart from its competition. The closest competitor to Game Center is the Xbox Live integration on Windows Phone 7. The Xbox Live hub lets Windows Phone users link their phone to their gamer tag and play mobile-enabled Xbox Live games on their handset.
As was the case with the previous advertisements, the semi-smug presentation will undoubtedly raise the ire of Android and BlackBerry users whose mobile operating systems can't quite compete in the gaming arena. Read on to watch the video and leave your thoughts in the comments. In what may be a mistake, Apple has enabled comments on this YouTube video so feel free to chime in there, too.

This is probably the douche-iest iPhone commercial yet. It almost sounds condescending at the end.
I usually like to check these out but this one just kind of pissed me off.
Am I the only one who wishes that there was a way to permanently disable Game Center? I never found it all that compelling to begin with and find it annoying to have the multiple log-in screens pop up any time I launch a game that's Game Center enabled.

Even when I tried "The Daily" for a few weeks it was annoying that the app itself was slow, but extremely annoying that every time I scrolled past the puzzle pages it would log me into Game Center and then pause the app just to tell me it had logged me in.
I get annoyed at the games that even when you have Game Center disabled, they must pop up a screen telling you it is disabled every time you load the game.
What game is that multiplayer flying one in the ad?

But these ads are horrible. Rather than reinforce the best associations one might have with the brand--cool, thoughtful design; it just works; etc.--they reinforce the worst associations--smug, elitist, holier-than-thou. Terrible, terrible, terrible campaign.
And I agree: the "yep" is the worst part,
The problem is, I have an iPad, and I game on the iPad, but I don't care about Game Center - I don't think I've even opened the app more than once. What's the point of it again?
March 25 2011 at 11:04 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyGame center doesn't cut it for me. I love apple products and am enjoying my iPad 2, but game center is vastly inferior to things like xbox achievements or event PSN trophies. There is no point total, for one! I chase down achievements in a console game to up my gamerscore. With game center there is no cumulative total. It's just a bunch of unconnected collections of achievements that don't interact with each other.
March 25 2011 at 10:56 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyMy problem with Game Center is they just made the sane mistake Blizzard did by requiring real user names to "friends". I don't think these companies understand how "friends" and "buddies" work in online games. We don't particuraly care to know these people beyond the fact that thief cool to play with. It's like bookmarking a website with funny article. You don't make it a regular stop, you just want to remember who that was an maybe play with then again some day.
There needs to be a two level setup to "friending". I call them aquaitances and friends. Aquaitances are people who think eachother cool enough to add to a buddy list so they can play again with ease later. A Friend is someone you know already or have gotten to know beyond "he's a mad man at Star Pagga."
I do hope Valve brings Steam tools to iOS, because that would kick game center in it's pathetic junk. Groups, friends without real names, online storage for some syncing... steam layer for text and voice chat?
And even if you HAVE the iPhone 4 (like me), you might still find these commercials horribly annoying. I can't stand the condescending "Yep" they put in every commercial. Makes me cringe every time.
