Tragedy in Japan hasn't "meaningfully impacted iPad 2 supply"

The Japanese earthquake had a devastating effect on the people of Japan and temporarily shut down many manufacturing facilites. Analysts speculated this disaster might have produced a shortage of key components used in the electronics manufacturing process, but according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, this shortage will have minimal effect on the future supply of the iPad 2.

Munster expects the current shortage of the iPad 2 to continue into the June 2011 quarter, but this shortage is the result of excessive demand, not component production issues. Both the iPad and the iPhone 4 could see, at most, a one to two week delay as a result of earthquake-related shutdowns. This is good news for Apple customers looking to score an iPad 2, especially those international fans who waited in long lines today, only to walk away empty-handed.

Of course, there are many problems Japan faces these days that are much more important than producing computers, but it's good to hear that this isn't another issue to deal with. A resumption of Japanese manufacturing will also help to stimulate the economy in Japan and help rebuild the devastated country.

Oh my GOD.

Would all of you idiots complaining about TUAW writing an article like this shut up and leave? They are doing their job. Their job is not to report on the Japan disaster, it is to inform us of Apple-related stories, such as this. Just because you donated $10 to the Red Cross doesn't mean you get to judge everyone.

You people are beyond annoying.

SpaceGhostFlyer - so sorry to be 'beyond' annoying you. I can only apologise wholeheartedly if my offence at this piece has in someway upset you. I retract everything I said. The article is fine, balanced & in no way makes light of the death of 16,000+ people. I now realise completely that NOTHING should ever stand in the way of your Apple-related news trivia. I truly hope when the world ends, I can still turn to TUAW for news on how this might affect the delivery of my iPad 125.
Yours,
Bleeding heart liberal $10 donating lefty

I seriously doubt anyone in Japan is going to give a rat's arse about you getting your iPad. We're having to deal with food and water shortages and you're worried about this?

Wow you sure have your priorities in the right order!!

I'm not angry at the writer, as I'm sure they had no intention to be callous. I had to let out a WTF laugh though at the "another issue to deal with" line.

I live in Japan. 20,000 deaths, 700+ aftershocks later and iodine tainted water, iPad 2 is the last thing on people's minds. I only read TUAW nowadays to give me some sense of the normalcy that existed two weeks ago.

Not asking for an apology. Just that that line be quietly removed.

Maybe the previous commenters are confused about what TUAW reports about...I think CNN has all your tsunami bases covered.

Well thank god for that. I was really worried my Apple tech would be needlessly delayed by the deaths of 16,000 people. Now I can sleep in my bed at night knowing everything is fine. Thankfully they don't make Apple products in Haiti. Or Christchurch.

Really though, who wrote this? Do you have _any_ sense of perspective?

As I said above, what do you suggest? That The Unofficial Apple Weblog not report this? Wait two weeks? NEVER post anything saying "past reports were incorrect?"

How would you tell readers that component supply isn't affected after all?

1) How about not making stuff up about Japan in the first place? In the old days before the internet, 'journalists' used to check their facts.
2) Not illustrating your article with a smiling picture of a woman even if you are just copying an Apple stock photo.
3) An addendum to the original article stating it was wrong and an admission it should have been checked before uploading.
4) If you must publish a new article, how about "We were wrong. Supply from Japan is unaffected. Sorry for not checking the facts in our original story." Statements along the lines of 'the Japanese have other things to worry about' are trite, trivialising & seem to have offended everyone who posted here. Except you.

TUAW is about Apple products but doesn't exist in isolation from the rest of humanity. It is read worldwide by a large audience who may have been affected by what is trivialised. How about you try to look at it from a Japanese perspective? Is that possible from within the Cult Of Steve?

It's been widely suggested that the disaster in Japan has impacted iPad production. That is false, this is an Apple news site, and TUAW is in the right to dispel that suggestion.

Nothing tasteless. Had this been a blog about issues facing the world, this article might have been in bad taste. But it isn't, and this article is not.

This isn't in bad taste?

"but it's good to hear that this isn't another issue to deal with" ?!

as well as the loss of your entire family, home, belongings, infrastructure, job and then, later, health?

The US-centric world view is alive & well. Congrats Montana. I hope Portland never has an earthquake.

So what do you suggest, let this story go untold on an Apple news site which has previously reported that the earthquake in Japan has significantly impacted production?

Yes, shortages of components are nowhere NEAR as disastrous as what happened in Japan between the earthquake and tsunami. I get that, and I'm sure the writer gets that. But are you suggesting this not go reported here? That's what dumbfounds me.

Really....10,000+ people die, even more have no home, food, clothing, etc....and we are worried that it may have delayed the iPad2. This was a carelous and insensitive article to post. Shame on you TUAW.

Right, issues like having to live in a refugee centre for the forseeable future with your family missing and your home destroyed. Possibly one of the most tasteless stories I've read on the subject. The writer desperately needs a sense of perspective.
