iPad 2 coming to RadioShack March 29 (confirmed)

The next time you're in RadioShack buying another radio-controlled monster truck to trick out with a Wi-Fi webcam and spy on your neighbors, you might want to keep your eyes open for something a bit more expensive -- an iPad 2.

MacRumors is reporting that despite widespread sellouts of the shiny new toy worldwide, Apple has apparently made enough iPad 2s to supply a new retailer. That retailer is RadioShack, and starting tomorrow (March 29), they'll have the devices at 500 US locations. This started as simply a rumor when the RadioShack internal memo pictured above was sent to the website, but it was verified by RadioShack store representatives who said they expected to have iPad 2s in stock tomorrow morning.

As MacRumors notes, it seems odd for Apple to add a new retailer at this time unless the company is confident that it can ramp up production quickly. RadioShack representatives were unable to confirm how many of the units they'll have on hand. If you can't get an iPad 2, they may have enough available monster trucks to keep you happy.

Update: Sneaky monkeys. RadioShack's website is already featuring a hidden product page for the iPad 2, ferreted out by 9to5Mac. Looks like it's for real!

We got in line at 8 for a mall store that opened at 10. There were only about 20 people in line (we were 3rd) and only 5 iPads in the store but we did get the one we wanted.

First Shack I called this morning answered at 7:20 even though they don't open until 10. Confirmed they had "some" in stock. First 2 choices: 64 gb AT&T 3G and 16 gb white wifi no go. Did have. 16 gb black wifi "woe be happy to hold for you". Gave them my name, showed up at 10:15, already people in line just in case, out with new iPad! One downer, only case was grey smart cover. Oh well. Otherwise a great experience.

I don't know how many stores are in a typical Shack district, but here in Silicon Valley they gave a whole 2 iPads for the whole district.

What a complete waste of a publicity opportunity, they should have held off the launch until they had more than a couple thousand units nationwide.

Does Wal-Mart have the iPad 2? I've been in two diffent Wal Marts in two different states this week(St Augustine FL and Asheville NC) and was told at both that they would not be carrying the iPad 2 even though they had sold the first gen iPad. The associate at one of the Wal Marts went so far as to tell me "Apple doesn't trust us with them." Both were Supercenters. The WalMart website also shows the iPad 2 as unavailable.

Don't hold your breath. Radio Shack has been a total disappointment for me. "You have questions? We have no answer!" There will be no ipad2 at Radio Shack on Mar 29. Mark my word!!!
