Patent hints at Apple's Spaces on the iPad

PatentlyApple has dug up a patent application Apple filed with the USPTO, which demonstrates that Apple is at least considering bringing Spaces to the iPad. While not mentioning the iPad by name, the patent does say that "In some embodiments, the device [for this patent application] is a desktop computer. In some embodiments, the device is portable (e.g., a notebook computer, a tablet, or a handheld device)."
Apple notes that the current method of switching between windows or applications on a device are "cumbersome and inefficient," requiring multiple presses or clicks which "create a significant cognitive burden on a user" and take longer than necessary, therefore wasting energy.
Apple suggests implementing Spaces on touch screen devices via a two-finger pinch in the corner of the screen. This two-finger pinch would display a grid of all open spaces or virtual desktops. The user could then use a single finger to swipe the selected Spaces grid into full screen view, thus enabling that Space.
Once again, we remind readers that Apple typically patents things that never see the light of day, but this hypothetical Spaces technology on the iPad would by much more user friendly than the current multitasking options available, which require the user to double-press the iPad's Home button then swipe a row of apps at the bottom of the screen before finally selecting an app to activate.

Would love to see Spaces on the iPad (or all of the iOS devices.) But how about all of our apps on one screen and we scroll down instead of multiple pages (I think the Droid is like that.) Then a right swipe would be Spotlight and a left swipe would be something like Spaces or Expose.
They could even put something in the menu bar to tap to bring up Spaces.
Spaces really does make sense on the iPad. But when I first saw the picture my initial thought was Expose. Drag four fingers down on the touch screen and it shows you all open applications. Anyway, Apple should definitely bring Expose and Spaces to the iPad.

I think software patents are anti-competive, unnecessary and most of the time ridiculous. Without software patents your idea is protected but in a more specific way not in the 'blah blah something like that' way.
I'm sure it's been mentioned before but I cannot understand why Apple has so far not used the space above the current window for some other use.
To the left we have spotlight, to the right (and left when multiple apps are open or multiple pages of apps are available) but we have nothing above the active window.
Before multi-tasking, I had suggested this idea on here at least to be used fo r user definable settings page or quick access to settings for wifi, Bluetooth etc... It could be an alternative home screen.
... With the Xcode upgrade and gesture navigation growing, this could still apply but now with spaces as hinted at in the patent application.
I predict Windows will now include this on their tablet editions, then try to squash the Apple patent while it is in process. But they will wait for that action until they deploy a very very broken unfriendly version first.
And also, after deploying the broken version based on Apple's published patent application, before Apple actually deploys the technology, some fan boy will point out it was on Windows Tablet first so Microsoft must have invented it.
Just say'n ... Apple innovates, "Others" copy and claim innovation.
Agreed... Just look at the new features mentioned in the Windows 7 TV Ads....

pinching in the corner might be awkward. The multitouch gestures might work better.
Or on the double click home button, the multitask bar could pull up with the left swipe audio options as the default, and then show spaces in the view above. That would also work with the 4 finger up gesture.
Pinch and swipe combined gesture. Maybe with three fingers and the reveal is the one in that direction away from the swipe. It allows a 2D field of screens and easy access. For example 9 screens (3x3) you can get to any screen from any screen by relocating the current screen to the logical center and wrapping the edges. I just implemented this gesture in a test app and it seems "comfortable".
Pinch the home screen with the same three fingers minus the swipe at the end could display the screens as a pallet on he iPad. The "with the swipe" gesture would work on the iPhone as well.
And of course being Apple, a real one should include some fancy folding effect curling the correct way with audio "blotter swap" noises in appropriate stereo rendition depending on the direction.
And yes, open to job offers from Apple. ;)
buy Xcode and turn your iPad 1 or 2 in a Developer ipad and use the Multi Gestures for swiping 4 fingers left and right between apps or up to reveal multitask bar, down to make it go away and four finger pinch to go to home screen...best 5 bucks I gave Apple since owning two ipads.

Patents are broken, but not that broken. Similarly trademark fictional characters (requires some extensions to get good coverage) then have copyright good for 20 years renewable by the author (not his estate) for another 20. Then off to the public domain! Keeps people from writing fiction using the same characters, fits the "reasonable period of time" for the protection as specified in the constitution.
And while we are reforming patents and copyrights create a category for software. It is unique in its creation, derivative works are common (bug fixes) and it has less value over time as technology advances. Give software patents clear guidelines and then limit them to 10 years protection. And clearly specify a damages schedule similar to what copyrights do for infringers.
