Viber for iPhone updated with free text messaging

I liked Viber when I tested it several months ago. It's an iPhone VoIP app that allows free phone calls to any phone that has the app installed. I thought the terrific audio quality, lack of ads and ease of setup were all positives.

Viber has been updated today to version 2.01 with free text messaging to all your Viber contacts. There are also notifications for incoming text messages, and the app has some small GUI improvements. Although Viber currently does not support the iPad or iPod touch, the developers say that is "almost here."

Viber Media claims the app has had more than 10 million downloads. The app requires iOS 3.1 or greater. There will be Android and BlackBerry versions, but those apps have been promised for several months and are no-shows so far. The app works on both Wi-Fi and 3G networks, and best of all, it's free.

After upgrading to the new version, my Favorites list changes from their Viber # to another phone # like their work or fax # and I can't call them from the Favorites list. I tried deleting and adding them back, but they eventually change to their non-Viber phone numbers.

hi @general

I'm not sure I quite understood what the problem is.
Please try to elaborate, step-by-step, on the problem so we can better understand it.

Thanks you,
Viber.

@glenn

We are aware of the problem in the UAE, and are working hard in order to fix it.
Please stay tuned for updates.

Thank you,
Viber.

Viber works very well and it's great if all your friends and family also have iPhones. But if you want something that works on all platforms even the Blackberry I would go for Nimbuzz:

Hi,

Regarding your questions:

1. @tigerglenn - may we ask what country you are located in? this might help us analyze your problem better and hopefully solve it soon

2. @leandroscp - please contact our Support Forum at http://support.viber.com to get more help with your problem. When you post a ticket there, please tell them you have already gone through the installation process and that you have discussed the matter with a Viber representative here (and provide this URL).

3. @E:bet - regarding the privacy issue:
We only collect names and phone numbers, nothing else (no recording of calls and such). Naturally, we collect users' information not because we are curious of its content, but for functional reasons, and in order for us to enable the service we, as a company, promise to provide. Without that information, Viber cannot function. This is not different from any other major social network/communication service provider in our world nowadays.

I would like to clarify again: we DO NOT sell users' information to third-parties, and we keep this information WELL locked in our servers, with extremely limited access to it. Your details and your contacts details are perfectly safe.

4. Viber already supports iPod-Touch and iPad. Please try it out. It is true that we don't put the maximum resources possible for maintaining Viber on these 2 platforms, but it should certainly be functional and working.

I'm in Dubai. Before I updated Viber, call function is working fine until I installed ver. 2.0.1. I learned that my friends encounter similar problem.

More power!

You say you are no different to other major social network/communication providers nowaways, but that's not true: Google provides SSL as standard and 2-factor authentication, and you say you can't provide details of your security.

Skype doesn't have my friends' names and numbers, but you do. Also, Skype submitted to an independent security audit. You have not.

And neither of these companies have a track record in selling their users' data, whereas you do. (Correct me if I am wrong, but Viber is the same outfit that used to run iMesh, which sold its users' data.)

Bottom line is that you need to be much more transparent and take a much more proactive stance with regards to security and privacy if you want to make your users happy.

Hi, Today I have tried to do the update of Viber, but the problem is begins when I get to the part when you have to enter the access code. The message says the code should be sent to my phone in 60 secs, otherwise press the button (no code). I have been waiting for more than 24 hours for the code even pushed (no code button) few times.
What should I do? Delete the App and install it again? Any suggestions?

Cheers

I could be wrong, but doesn't AT&T offer free "in network" calling? So won't this app only be useful when calling from an AT&T iPhone to a Verizon iPhone?

Or it could be useful for calling non-Americans and other foreigners.

Never considered that. Guess that means I don't have any friends outside of the U.S.

What about privacy? Recording of conversations, selling my adressbook and that of THE friends I call?

Is programming for the iPod Touch that different that you guys don't support it yet? Although I use FaceTime for family quite a bit I'd love you use your app for text when we don't feel like doing face to face chats but most of the family has the iPod.
