MLB offers free MLB.tv trial during April for buying app

Baseball season started this week, and things are already off to a rip-roaring start, with the Yankees in first place. My Cubs are, well, losing as I write this (Dempster's grand slam on Friday didn't help my fantasy baseball team, either). We've already reported that the terrific MLB apps for iPhone and iPad have been updated this year, but now Major League Baseball is offering an even better deal: buying either of the apps for iPhone or iPad (or Android, if you happen to have that kind of phone) gets you a free MLB.tv trial through the month of April courtesy of automotive sponsor Volvo.
I like the MLB.tv service. I didn't go for it this year (at least, not yet), but I subscribed last year and really enjoyed watching my Cubs games out of market here in Los Angeles, as well as pulling up all of the HD game videos on my iPhone (and even the PS3). The only drawback of the service for most people is the price (it's at least US$99.99 for the entire year), so this trial is great. You basically get to watch a month of baseball games from all over the league for free.
If you haven't been sold on the apps yet, maybe this free trial of the TV service will change your mind. Speaking of the apps, you can definitely use them without the video service; you still get updated scores, standings and radio broadcasts without any extra subscription charge. You can find the MLB.com At Bat 11 apps on the App Store right now.

My biggest problem with the app is that they have disabled mirroring on the iPad 2 when the app is running. This means that you can't use the app to watch all of the free games in April or watch the animated gamecast with gameday audio. The hdmi mirroring apparently worked during spring training, and then MLB released an update that disabled that.

The price would be more acceptable if it felt like we were getting significant upgrades each year. There are some very basic flaws with this version like only listing gametimes in Eastern time when Sportacular and others convert it to local time.
Only purchase if you use gameday audio heavily.
Regarding the blackout thing: this isn't new. I'm not sure why everyone thinks the local blackout thing has suddenly disappeared because MLB.TV is available on your device now.
Whether the blackout policies are a realistic business practice in 2011 is another argument. However, anyone complaining about "not getting their local games", please inform yourself before dropping $115. Those policies are right on the MLB.tv homepage.
No thanks. At this price we're all being harvested for even bigger MLB payrolls. Professional "sports" has become professional entertainment and team salaries have become obscene.
Just say "No".
@Edsel:
Professional sports have *always* been professional entertainment, from the earliest history of man.
Do you think ticket prices or iOS app prices or broadcast subscription prices would change one iota if the players played for free? They are priced what they are because that's what the market will bear. If you don't believe me, check out the ticket prices for any successful NCAA football team.
@roadsider: Agreed. The whole "regional blackout" thing reeks of old-world limitations on a new-world system. Very reminiscent of the ridiculous stuff you see the newspaper companies pull in order to remain viable.
Speaking as a non-baseball-fan who really wants to get back into baseball after 25 years away, it's really frustrating that I've gotta spend a minimum of $115 for half a year of one sport, and even still, that doesn't grant me access to all games. I've paid $15 for the app, and I'm already feeling dissuaded from using it.
Correct me if I'm wrong here but I don't believe this is a true preview of mlb.tv for the month of april, only the free video feed for all out of market games on your iPhone. I was extremely excited to start streaming games through boxee only to find out you only get videos on iPhone and iPad
April 03 2011 at 11:07 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAccording to one of the front page reviews for the iPhone app:
"They advertise free MLB.tv for the month of April courtesy of Volvo. What they fail to tell you is you only get one free game per day and THEY pick the game. Today was Arizona and Colorado. Not exactly a marquee matchup."
Caveat emptor.
@John B. You have to have a free account from MLB.tv to get the free month of viewing games. Once you sign into your account you can view all the out of market games you want. The only viewing one game per day has always been that way for the app.
I do wish there was a way to watch local games if a user didn't have cable. I'm tempted to ditch cable and only use this but that's not possible.
no subscription for the app? bull crap. after this season the app will be useless. you will have to buy At Bat 2012 next season for another 15.00...
