Korean rumor puts iPhone 5 release in June (updated)

Update: The Loop remains convinced this will not happen.
TUAW has seen an uptick in the number of rumors making their way around the blogosphere lately, purporting to know when the iPhone 5 will finally arrive. The latest is from Korea, where ETNews is reporting that the fifth-generation device is going to appear in June at an event to be held after WWDC.
The rumor doesn't hold water when held up to Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer's recent comment that 8 MP Sony digital camera sensors would be delayed getting to Apple due to earthquake damage at a plant in Japan. Then again, Sony supplying camera sensors to Apple may be a misunderstanding anyway.
ETNews also states that two South Korean telecom companies, KT and SK Telecom, will be getting the iPhone 5 soon after launch. That's contrary to common shipping patterns for Apple products, in which South Korea gets products well after launch. For example, the iPhone 4 just made it to South Korea on March 16.
It's also rare for Apple to hold a press event for a new product so close to the Worldwide Developer's Conference. Most of us here at TUAW are treating this as a hopeful rumor, and we're holding out for a September release of the latest iPhone.

ARTICLE CORRECTION:
the iphone 4 launched in korea last september, not in march. it arrived on a *second* carrier in march, but it was available long before that.
After playing with a 4.3 inch Android phone. I really hope the next iPhone to have a larger screen.

Steve fired the head of Apple's portable group following that screw-up. Count on the iPhone 5 shipping as usual this Summer.

April 05 2011 at 1:46 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWe had a rumor of the next iPhone being released in the fall, now another rumor saying it'll be released in the summer. Here's the way I look at it. There are two sides, one side of people who upgraded to an iPhone 4 last year and believe 100% that the next iPhone will be released in the fall. The other side is the 3G/3GS owners that believe that the next iPhone will be released this summer, June perhaps. (I'm one of those, currently typing on a 3GS.).
The truth is, only Apple knows when the new phone will be released and everything else is what it is, a rumor.
If the design is at all accurate, I think it's wise to emulate the iPad 2 styling. Quite handsome, I think.
The error with the story is that while South Korea gets Apple products some time after awhile, they had iPhone 4 since September 2010 via KT. The March 16th release date is referring to the SKT release of iPhone 4, as it was correctly referred to in the link you have provided.

And as someone who spent his last two years in Korea, the local media have a lot of unverified rumors published about various electronic gadgets, with Apple products getting plenty of page views. I would take this rumor with a deliberate amount of salt on top.
the picture is just Photoshop, it has nothing to do what the iphone 5 might looks like. I do think that the next iphone is coming in June or July. Personality I hope they get rid of the glass back.
April 05 2011 at 12:58 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI think that photoshopped phone looks pretty slick, if it had a black face. I sure hope they don't put 8MP cameras in this phone. No one needs them, nor could the average person Really tell a difference. People just buy into the megapixel myth. I'm a photographer and I get equally outstanding pics from my iPhone, my 6mp DSLR, my 10mp DSLR, and my 21mp DSLR
April 05 2011 at 12:52 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyBut DSLR cameras have great processors and amazing lens' that's why they look so good even with lower megapixels. But since there's no zoom I need more megapixels to blow my iPhone photos up without pixelating.
