Survey illustrates iPad's effect on PC market

A recent survey by Google-owned AdMob found many consumers are spending more time on their tablets and less time sitting at their personal computers, using their smartphones, watching television, listening to the radio or reading paper books. The survey highlights the rapidly shifting habits of customers in a tablet market that AdMob expects will reach 165 million devices over the next two years.
Among the 1,430 tablet owners who participated in the survey, 77 percent admitted to spending less time with their personal computers after buying a tablet, 43 percent said they now use their tablets more than their personal computers, and 28 percent claimed to use a tablet as their primary computer. Most tablet users, 68 percent, spent at least one hour each day with the device, primarily for playing games (84 percent), searching for information (78 percent) or email correspondence (74 percent).
The survey results didn't reveal any future buying decisions, but these new usage patterns may suggest a near future in which consumers spend less time and money on notebook and desktop computers. Are you spending less time at your personal computer since getting an iPad or other tablet device? Will it make you less likely to buy a notebook or desktop machine in the future? Let us know in the comments.

I would interested to see a study of iPhone owners who also own an iPad. To see how much the use their iPad vs their iPhone. I was so excited to get my iPad last April and after about a month I pick it up once a week maybe. I have my iPhone on me which essentially is a smaller version the iPad when it comes to functionality but much more portable. Even when my iPad is within reach I instinctively grab my phone. Call it habit but it seems more convenient not to mention pocket friendly.

Being that I can easily use the iPad from my commute on the bus, at home without having to start up a computer, or anywhere I go really, my computer has definitely taken a backseat to most things not word processing related.

Email, browsing and the best waste of time there is! Will never be a replacement for serious "computer" work, but as a couch device you'll not get better.
I'm pretty much doing all my "consuming" on an iOS device and my "creating" on my MacBook Pro. It's magical you know!

Apple BT keyboard allows me to be completely LapTop free when I travel/go to meetings. Evernote/GoodReader/Pages/Numbers/Keynote/Reeder are the key apps. Life is so much simpler. Needed the VGA adapter for Keynote and YubiKey for 2FA.

"77% admitted to spending less time with their personal computers after buying a tablet"
There are 23% of people surveyed who use their computer just as much as before, AND use the tablet? With 24 hours in a day, only so many of those hours can be dedicated to computers/similar devices.
At some point a person's electronic device usage becomes a zero-sum game. If my lifestyle allows me to spend 3 hours a day on my computer (outside of work), and then I buy a tablet, I will take those 3 hours and split them in some way between the computer and tablet... in that view, by the basic laws of mathematics, if I spend any time at all on my tablet I am inevitably spending less time on my computer.
There are only two options when comparing tablet usage effects on computer usage. If tablets are effective, computer usage will decline. If tablets are not effective, computer usage will not be impacted (and tablets will not sell well).
So really, the 'news' here is that people use tablets...
I use it mostly for RSS reading, Netflix, and games. So it competes with my Kindle, TV, and Xbox 360. But it doesn't really compete with my computer because I still use that a ton for content creation.

Storage is becoming much less important. I use streaming services like audiogalaxy and zumocast on my ipad and my android phone while out and about and can access my entire 10TB music and movie collection. This would not even be possible using a laptop's physical storage so I may as well go for the smaller form factor.
The ipad is also an order of magnitude faster and more powerful than my acer netbook with less mass and greater battery life. Typing is a breeze on the device as well once you get accustomed to it.
I sold my laptop after I bought the iPad 1, then sold my iPad 1 to buy the iPad 2.
I don't see myself ever buying a laptop or notebook ever again.
The only reason I can think of where I would buy a laptop would be if I had a job that required me to travel and run demanding programs (Final Cut, Aperture, Photoshop) on location. And even then I would only use it for that.
Since I got my iPad 2 about 3 weeks ago I am using it increasingly more every day. I would say that that I am probably close to using it 3/4 of the time over my desktop computer - web browsing, email, games and social connecting. I also have a newer MacBook Pro that I had been using over my desktop about 1/3 of the time. I will keep the laptop to replace my desktop in the next year or two (my desktop is an older G5 iMac that can no longer run the latest and greatest). I can see that for me the future will be the iPad - the only thing I'll be buying in the years ahead will be the latest and greatest iPad.
