New VW Bus concept comes with iPad interface

The venerable Volkswagen Bus has been remade for the next millennia, and the updated version of the hippie bus is now earth-friendly and technologically savvy. A concept version of the van, now called the Bulli, was showcased by Volkswagen at the Geneva International Motor Show held in March. The van is smaller than its Microbus predecessor and seats six within an interior that includes two full-length bench seats. The van also includes an electric motor capable of 90 miles of run-time with a 4-cylinder gas backup and an integrated interface made specifically for the iPad. All you Apple-loving, Birkenstock-wearing, sustainable living folk may want to keep a watchful eye to see if this concept makes it from drawing board to showroom floor.

The iPad runs on the iPhone OS. So the interface would be similar to the iPhone's and not like a netbook.

Birkenstocks? Do people still wear those? I see everyone going with the Keens now....

It's small, ugly and would be too cramped to have a decent shag in it. Might as well buy a VW Caravelle Camper -- much nicer.

It would be better if the iPad lowered into a protective holding area when the car is powered off. Having an iPad sitting docked in your car 24/7 is just asking for a smash and grab break-in.

I was thinking the same thing. Not being able to control any of your car's electronics because of iPad thievery would suck. Perhaps it comes with a spare in the back?

I have hoped for awhile that someone would not only add a dock but make it integrated with car info. That would be kewl.

There is your navigation screen, music, movies, car system check-up, wi-fi hotspot (incumbent upon Apple), and charger. Un-dock and pass it to the backseat when needed.

Would be great if it could also 'network' with an iPod Classic to access its big-@ss hard drive.

I'm sorry, but this does not qualify as a VW Bus (or Kombi, as it's known around the world). It only has two rows of seats, regular doors. This is a glorified NIssan Cube.

Isn't this the same concept van they've been flogging around the car show circuit for the last 12 years?

I don't think it's the same one. I remember really liking the one from ten years ago. This one does nothing for me.

Not all advocates of sustainable living wear Birkenstocks.

Agreed. Only the serious ones do. The rest buy their $200 trendy versions of Birks and ride a fad that increases their social acceptability. Guaranteed this went to production, most "sustainable livers" couldn't afford it anyways.

True and not all Birkenstock wearers support sustainable living.

As a former VW-bus owner, that last line is more a less a description of myself, especially when I was in my late teens. I no longer own the bus, still wear birks, and am less hardcore about sustainability. Reduce, reuse, recycle is more my motto than living off the grid nowadays.

I would consider buying the bus, but as Alai points out, I probably could not afford it. Lol
