Google: "Whenever iPhone succeeds, Google succeeds."

In a somewhat parasitic admittance of being a team player, Google's Asia-Pacific president Daniel Alegre said that Google wants the iPhone to keep growing, because Apple's device is delivering so much mobile search traffic their way. "Whenever iPhone succeeds, Google succeeds," Alegre told AdNews. "I actually don't look at it as iPhone versus Android. iPhone is a very strong driver of query growth for Google. We also monetize apps through the iPhone ... we actually benefit from iPhone's growth."

While it's no surprise that Google benefits from iPhone usage, as its search engine is the default one on the iPhone, it's refreshing to hear Google admit that the iPhone helps them. But before you start to believe that Google has only good wishes for Apple's or any other manufacturer's phones, Alegre does admit that Google believes having too many mobile OSes is bad for development. "We truly believe there has to be as few platforms as possible in order for apps developers to focus their development," he said.

I think Android is great (friend has Samsung Galaxy S, I have iPhone4), I hope Google sees that the pie is big enough that they can continue to integrate their products into the iPhone without worrying about market share. Conversely I hope Apple is not so bitter about Google making a smartphone that they stop pursuing tight Goggle integration into the iPhone.

"as few platforms as possible" means two. Droid and iOS means both platforms generate search engine income for Google. Droid and Windows Mobile means competition for their search engine.

of course Google would prefer those two platforms to be Droid and iOS: a MSoft competitor would include Bing and threaten Google's core market, their cash cow.

I've been saying this forever. As long as it's iOS and Android, Google wins.

Google doesn't want iOS dead. They may want everything else gone, but iOS...at this point, they want them as profitable as ever.

That's like saying Samsung wants Apple demolished. They make money off every iPhone made...so companies like Google and Samsung win either way!

If Google had their way, the "one" mobile platform we would all be using would be Android. Of course there would be a different version of Android on every phone that came out.

If Google thinks we need as few mobile OSes as possible, they should support the iPhone and iOS as that choice, because currently there are four iPhone models, and all run the same OS. Older devices that are no longer supported will run the same OS forever and newer devices should always run the latest version.

That would be better for mobile unification than having ten dozen versions of Android running around.

Well, I think it's obvious- any company associated with Apple is making bank.

Yes and those few platforms should be iOS and Android. Google has a long way to go to be as good as iOS on the performance aspect and it looks like RIM has no chance. WP7 looks okay but is not even close to Android or iOS.

I second your thoughts.

3 might stand though. No one thought the console market could have 3 strong platforms and yet the current round proves otherwise.

So is WP7 the third by Microkia? RIM has niched themselves.

That should say those few (3) platforms are iOS, Android, and WP7. With the newest Mango update to WP7 (if it ever gets out to all phones) might cause Apple and Google to rethink their OS. Competition is good for everybody. It keeps Google and Apple actively working on new stuff.

It's true... when Apple does well, they help out a lot of people/companies:
-App developers
-Mobile Web developers
-Ad creators
etc...
