Nationwide Best Buy iPad 2 promotion begins Sunday, April 17

For those of you who are still trying to get your hands on an iPad 2, your best bet in the near term is probably going to be this Sunday at a Best Buy. According to a leaked memo obtained by Engadget, most Best Buy stores will have at least three of each iPad model (which isn't a lot given the demand).
There are technically 18 models of iPads (six Wi-Fi and twelve 3G models), but it's unsure if the Best Buy memo is saying each store will have three of each of the 64 GB 3G AT&T and Verizon models, for example, or just a total of three 64 GB 3G models.
Last week, rumors were flying that Apple had ordered Best Buy to pull all iPads from the shelves because the company was actually stockpiling them for this event. While the stockpiling was true, the order from Apple turned out to be false. The memo also states that if you have a reserve order fulfillment ticket, you'll be given priority over the normal Joes standing in line. But if you're sans ticket and want and iPad 2 badly, get to your local Best Buy to beat the lines. Best Buy stores typically open at 11 AM on Sundays. Good luck!

This app worked great! Really handy for the visually challenged among us, though I wish it did best buys and a few other major retail chains. Still, very nice. Props for the developer!

Same at my local Bestbuy in Austin. No units, but taking reservations. Also, the saleperson said something about "them" putting "the add" in the paper too soon. What???

April 17 2011 at 10:22 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySame thing at my local Best Buy. Stood in line for 30 minutes, first one in the door... "We don't have any in stock, but we are taking reservations. Could take two weeks to three months to get that."
So much for "minimum stock" and "laws."
Went to two Best Buy stores this morning -- nada.
April 17 2011 at 6:23 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyNot only that but what's the point if they still have a backlog of reserved units? They could have released those units to peole who have been waiting for them instead of playing inventory games.
Thus just confirms to me that Best Buy is run by assholes who don't understand the world they are selling to.
The rule is reservations first. Outside of the 3 units mandated by law at the some stores, everything else is clearing the list. But if, for example, there was no list for the 16 GB Verizon 3g in white, any of those units were not to be sold to any walk ins until tomorrow. And they froze taking more wait list names during this stock pile.
so what's the "promotion" - why is 3 units on Sunday different than any other day?
This promotion makes no sense. Especially with such low inventory volumes. All they're gonna have is more customers who leave with nothing.
They won't be making any more money by doing this because the iPad 2 is gonna sell with or without an 'event'.
Actually they won't. They will have customers that leave with no ipad 2, perhaps a movie or two that they notice on the way in or out (Harry Potter did just come out and is probably right by the door) and their name hopefully on the wait list so they will be coming back a second time to get the ipad and hopefully more stuff.
Which is why Best Buy is doing this at all. Loss Leader tactics at their finest.
Whats the point if they still have that backlight bleeding that Apple wont respond to?

April 16 2011 at 10:12 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyMINIMUM. That is due to laws in a handful of states that say that if you put something in your flyer you have to have stock of it in the stores at the start of the promotion period. And it must be at least 3 units of whatever is advertised.
