GoodReader for iPad gains AirPlay, encryption, and improved PDF annotation

TUAW favorite GoodReader for iPad was upgraded to version 3.6, which boasts a number of improvements. These features include:

  • Data encryption
  • The ability to flatten PDFs to embed annotations
  • Video file can be played using AirPlay
  • Symbolic PDF page labels are supported
  • Improved compatibility with Google Docs and Apple Preview

Note that this update will take a bit longer than previous ones because GoodReader will need to process all the files that exist in it for data protection.

GoodReader for the iPad is US$4.99. An update to the iPhone version, taking that to version 3.6.1, is in the approval process.

Unfortunately, encryption in the new version 3.6 does NOT seem to work, as I am still able, even after carefully following all instructions and making sure that everything went right, to transfer and read protected and encrypted files and folders from my iPad to my Mac using the tool GoodReaderUSB. Hopefully this will be corrected soon as GoodReader is my favourite tool for PDF handling. Another much desired future improvement would be excellent indexing and search (on single word or phrase basis) features (like FoxTrot is doing on my Mac).

Agreed that GoodReader is awesome. What I'd like to see them add is the ability to make notes in a separate file. So, for example, the screen could be split with my open PDF in one part and a simple note-taker in another part (even text only). That way I could use it as a real study aid in place of a textbook and notebook - I don't want to have to scan through the document again to find my notes when it comes to revise on them. I just want to skim through my notes.

I like it a lot too, but it's bookmarks are not still not readable/compatible by/with Preview or Acrobat.

I love this app, I just wish they'd get a better icon. It looks so generic and budge for an app of this quality.

The frequency of GoodReader updates and the list of features that each one brings is staggering. Without question one of the best apps on the market.

Fantastic app , as reviews say. Just to add (I'm surprised How often is omitted) that is one of the very few readers wich can output VGA. As a teacher, I can anotate & draw on PDFs and my pupils can follow the process on the projected screen! Wonderful collection of tools to work with almost any kind of file, you'll find a special ability to suit your work flow. Incredible value.

GoodReader is a fantastic app, and highly recommended to everyone.

I love the way they keep updating so regularly to add new features. Airplay was a surprise.

(I have nothing to do with the company, other than as a user)

Good Reader is amazing! I use it to annotate PDF files, which is much easier than anything on the desktop... touch + highlight, touch + note, etc... very nice!
