Sony's Crackle app for iOS approved by Apple

A few months ago, we reported on how Apple rejected the Sony Reader app from the App Store, seemingly singling out the electronics and media company for punishment when similar apps like Amazon's Kindle and Barnes & Noble's Nook readers for iOS were untouched.

Sony appears to have decided to follow the old maxim that "if you at first don't succeed, try, try again," since they have had a new app for iOS approved by Apple. The free Crackle app gives access to hundreds of movies in the Columbia Pictures, Screen Gems, Sony Pictures Classics, and Tri-Star libraries, as well as thousands of TV series episodes.

Available for free are movies like Ghostbusters, series like Seinfeld and Married ... With Children, and The Three Stooges. According to Crackle's App Store description, you can build and manage your viewing queue on the app or online, and video streams over Wi-Fi and 3G. More new movies and TV episodes will be added on a regular basis.

So how is Sony making money on this? There are short ads that appear during the video, but most reviewers in the App Store are saying that they're so short that they're almost unnoticeable. It's a free app with free content, no subscription fee, and good quality, so it looks like a winner.

I hate stuff like this. Sony needs to get their heads out of the 18th and realise that proving stuff like this to one part of the globe and not others encourages the rest of us to find our own way to watch programs for free.

(Side note: TUAW, did you delete my last comment because I criticized Sony too harshly? That's a bit off)

I'm in Germany and I have virtually no selection—only 1 full length movie. Anyway, on my 3G, it likes to crash. =[

Interesting finding. If you tune in to Married with Children, the music is completely different. It would seem that Sony did not get permission to use the original music. Additionally, looking at the quality, which seems very good, I suspect that the commercials - which all appear to be Sony's games for the Playstation 3, came prepackaged with the download, hence the immediate play. I think that the shows are probably buffering in the background while the commercials are playing. Altogether this is quite good, even over 3g.

I really like the app.
The idea of watching full-length movies streaming into your iPad on-demand is just amazing!
I've posted a quick review with some screenshots showing the differences of how the app would look like on the iPad and the iPhone here: http://bit.ly/dJZzQH
I hope they follow this up with a regular update to the movies collection.

I'll have to do some more research into how this compares with what's available on Netflix's Instant library, obviously if most of the things in this app are available there it's redundant for those with a Netflix subscription, but cool otherwise. I'm watching "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" right now (I also just checked and both this and Advent Children are NOT available for Instant View on Netflix), and the image quality on my iPhone 4 looks great! A 30 second commercial every once and a while is totally worth this. If I were to watch a movie on cable TV I'd probably have more commercial time, and more content editing.

Seems like the app does not let GPS to turn off, even after you quit the app. Anyone else has the same problem?

I don't usually say this, because ads ruin the user experience. The ads on this app are so clear and crisp. They're actually a joy to sit through!

This app also continues to track your location even when not in use. I had to go into settings / location and turn off to get location icon to go away.

Why did you say "allow" in the first place?

Yes, pretty invasive and battery killer if you ask me. I had to disable location service for this app and I can think of only other that (iHeartRadio) that does this. I am surprised that Apple's API even allows this to happen.

Given that all of the movies/shows have links to purchase from the iTunes store, I doubt very much that we'll ever see AirPlay support added to this app.
