TUAW's Daily App: Starfront Collision

Gameloft has earned a reputation for, ahem, "borrowing" some game ideas for the App Store. A lot of the company's (very popular) games are more or less copies of popular titles on other platforms. One of Gameloft's latest games, Starfront Collision, is no different; it's basically a clone of StarCraft.

But here's the thing: Who cares? Blizzard hasn't actually put out a version of StarCraft for iOS, and to be honest, the RTS options are pretty limited. So if Gameloft wants to "borrow" the genre and even some of its various factions and units, that doesn't bother us one bit.

Unfortunately, it doesn't quite have the polish of StarCraft (what does?), but it's a working RTS, built from the ground up for the iPhone. While it would be nice to see some official Blizzard games on iOS, we don't have those yet. In the meantime, fans of the genre and Blizzard's classic can check out Starfront Collision, either as a free version with in-app purchases for content, or by buying the app at US$2.99.

It's a nice start but still a bit cumbersome. They could use a way to clear unit groups. Maybe swipe to delete/edit on the group icon.

What I'm waiting for are better 4x games like Master of Orion 2 or even Garatioutuous Space Battles. 4x would work well in a touch interface and if done with an infinity blade like autosave state for "play as you have time" I think it would be more acessanble to more people. I really hope to see Garatioutuous Space Battles. I think the casual iOS masses would like that one. Also keep an eye for Majesty Fantasy Kingdom Mobile, currently on Android and port coming to iOS. If they get the free play mode included I think we'd see another hit. Like Garatioutuous Space Battles it saves the player from the "micro" of combat by giving the "heroes" their own AI which can be swade by "rewards", other wise the player on controls what is bulit and what units are trained. Didn't do so hot on PC but I think as quick "poke it" mobile game it may do much better.
