White iPhone proximity sensor, death grip tested on video

You don't have to watch the two videos after the break if you don't want to -- we'll just tell you that Italy's iSpazio blog tested the white iPhone's proximity sensor and "death grip" antenna seam issue, and that, surprise, they're both fine. The proximity sensor seems to work a little better than that on my black iPhone 4 (based on observations of this video), and while the "death grip" on the iPhone 4's antenna does make it lose a bar, reception is unaffected. So don't worry.
The bigger question is why the white iPhone 4 took so long to arrive. We've heard Apple was working to improve the proximity sensor and antenna. Also, there may have been issues with the camera, or perhaps Apple had trouble nailing the perfect shade of white. There are a few improvements here, but (without having actually seen one myself) there's nothing that would conceivably cause a 10-month delay. Maybe it really was that shade of white -- was that worth 10 extra months?

Wasn't the antenna problem only an issue in the U.S.? That white phone appears to say 'T-Mobile' (i.e., not in the U.S.; maybe not on U.S. carrier bands).

My experience with the antenna has been that sometimes the death grip will make it go down a bar after about 15-20 seconds, I once got it to go down 2 bars after about a minute. Maybe it's because mine is a Verizon phone which allegedly the top section is an alternate antenna when the bottom antenna's signal is weakened, but that's just a rumor. The only reason I have a case for mine is because it's easier to grip.

April 27 2011 at 2:16 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyMaybe the delay was really done to to create demand while we wait for iPhone 5. Would be a brilliant marketing move.

"Hey, we'll have the white model ready in a few weeks but since we're planning to delay the iPhone 5 let's postpone this for now. We can then have a 'major' release in the news after the iPad 2 hype has died down without affecting our model upgrade strategies. Not only will people be talking about finally getting the white iPhone 4, but the articles about why the white model took so long will be virtually endless!"
...Maybe it's got an A5 in it...? ;-) There's rumor they're circulating to developers...
