iPhone: "Does this white paint make me look fat?"

Ryan Cash had an opportunity to compare the new white iPhone with the more traditional black model that many of us know and love. Placed side-by-side on the desk, it appears that the white model is ever so slightly thicker. This is possibly due to a need to filter light, a design problem originally floated back last October and confirmed this week by Steve Jobs.
Apple does not list any technical specification differences between the two models. If you've got a new iPhone 4 blanco, please let us know if you have any difficulty using an existing case or cover with it.
Engadget has a pretty clear picture of what's going on here.

Aw crud. Slightly thicker means the white iPhone is going to be too tight for the camera holder on the Steadicam Smoothee. %$#@!!!

It is obvious that over time, black iPhones are "evaporating".
How do we know that the Black iPhone hasn't undergone what the scientific community call "pocket compression". Whereas over time the the soft nuggety centre of the Black iPhone has compressed from being in the pocket of the user. I am actually surprised the size difference is not more noticeable and that Apple is continuing to use soft nuggety centres in the iPhones.

Cheers
Yes that's right, because the White iPhone is .2mm thicker - it's fragmented - clearly.

April 29 2011 at 3:21 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyGot my white parts form guy who claimed they were from FoxConn a little while back and I noticed this right away. Must be a result of the UV protection they were talking about. I thought they were fake until this story came out, kind of makes sense why A: my invisible shield was much tougher to install and B: why the phone no longer fits in my original iphone dock.

April 28 2011 at 11:02 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWasn't the problem with the white iPhone that light was showing through? It would stand to reason that the fix for this would be slightly thicker plastic, so this doesn't really suprise me in the least.
April 28 2011 at 10:47 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThat's exactly right, more diffusion of light.
April 29 2011 at 9:26 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI have both a black and a White - White is marginally thicker (front glass is thicker than the back), it's instantly noticeable if you have a keen eye.
Upside - bumpers fit better. Downside - people will complain about it. No big deal really.
Apparently Apple realizes this too. Check out the iPhone specs page (http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html) and look at note 1 in regards to the size and weight. It says "Actual size and weight vary by configuration and manufacturing process."
