New iMacs 25 percent faster than previous generation

A few days ago, we reported on Macworld's benchmark results for the new Sandy Bridge-equipped iMacs. Macworld found them to be, on average, about 16 percent faster in the Speedmark 6.5 test than the previous generation. Now Primate Labs has put together a report detailing the iMac's speed increases based on user-submitted Geekbench 2 results.
According to Primate Labs, the new Sandy Bridge iMacs are up to 25 percent faster than their Lynnfield predecessors. 25 percent isn't earth-shattering, but it's a nice bump for the newest models. When Primate Labs pitted the Sandy Bridge iMacs against the two-generations-old Wolfdale Core 2 Duo iMacs, however, the newest iMacs ran a whopping 70 percent faster. Time for an upgrade, Core 2 Duo iMac owners?

I received my 27" 3.4 ghz quad core i7 imac yesterday. As soon as i removed it from the box i dropped in 16 gb of RAM from OWC and let me tell you, this thing is amazing. With Handbrake taking advantage of all 8 virtual cores, it takes 8-10 minutes to convert a full length movie using the H2.64 codec.
cant wait to throw windows 7 on here and play crysis with the 2gb graphics card
Don't get your hopes up. There is virtually no chance the New Yorker will be $19.99 a year. That price is for the monthlies.
If the do an annual price for TNY at all and it comes in under $50, I'd be shocked.
That is good to see. Certainly will be faster than my late 2009 model i7. Now hurry up Apple. I placed my order on Tuesday and it still has not been built or shipped and all I did was change the video card.

May 07 2011 at 10:54 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI'd love to see a comparison to my late 2007 2.4Ghz model. That might prompt me to upgrade.
May 07 2011 at 8:49 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIsn't that just a CPU benchmark, so the new, way faster GPU isn't taken into account at all? I think the big gap between i5 and i7 is mostly due to hyperthreading. This might be realistic for very well threaded applications like video encoding, but I guess in day to day work you won't notice it as much as the numbers might suggest.
The numbers to the right are like horsepower to cars right?
But by horses I mean wizards.
My 2006 MBP is still chugging, and I won't go with another Apple laptop. An iPad is much cheaper and suits my needs in a mobile "computer" about the same as an insanely priced MBP (that is bound to be dropped...).
I've been waiting for this. I find out about my new job by the end of the month, then the 27' is mine!
You are more likely to drop an ipad than a laptop. Why would you ever be holding one long enough to drop it?
May 07 2011 at 1:41 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWell it happened. And I've been using a MBP hooked to a monitor for about 2 years now because Apple Care is a joke.
An iPad is a quarter the price of my MBP was, and I'm much more careful than I was 5 years ago, so unless I drop it 4x more, I think I'll be okay. But my phone and (hopefully soon) iMac should suffice for now.
