Safari Books Online takes Safari to Go to the iPad

Safari Books Online iPad appSafari Books Online (SBO) has announced the availability of Safari To Go, its second-generation iPad app (first launched in November 2010) that offers access to SBO's extensive library of books and videos. This free application lets users mark favorites, save books for offline reading, search by topic and more.

Speaking of SBO's library, it's extensive. You'll find thousands of books and videos from over 40 publishers, like Apress, Cisco Press, FT Press* and O'Reilly. Most titles focus on technology as well as professional development and working with digital media.

Note that the app will perform best on a Wi-Fi network. The developers note that a future update will increase 3G support.

The app is free and available now. E-book junkies with a technology bent will want to add this one to their lineup.

*Full disclosure: I have a book available from Safari Books Online via FT Press.

Safari To Go ... Only works on wifi?! I have been waiting a good many years for safari to offer a sensible off-line reading option. Saw the email advertising this and thought we finally had it. Nope. Even worse than the website. Stupid O'Reilly!

It may not be fast on 3G, but Wifi is plenty fast and the offline mode works well. Just use "favorites" command to add a book to your offline list. Once it is locally buffered you can even read it on a plane.

Have they fixed the bugs? Previous versions have all been slow and buggy, some features being completely unusable. UI issues were a problem as well.

This is a complete rewrite. It is worlds faster and more stable the original version. I no longer get the "you can only read the top half of the page" bug on books.

Why isn't there an iPhone version? I know it's a lot more cramped but even iBooks has an iPhone version. I carry my iPhone with me 100% of the time, it would be nice to get in some technical reading during the day while I'm not at a computer.

But there's no offline caching, etc
Native app features would be great

You should note that while the app is free, SBO is not. The cheapest subscription is about $250 per year.

I have the $9.99 subscription per month, which gives me five book slots and is a lot cheaper than $250 a year.
