More evidence of camera flash changes in next iPhone

Earlier we reported on a rumored "iPhone 5" case which suggested that Apple has decided to move the iPhone's camera flash farther away from the camera lens. Now Asian Apple site Apple.pro has posted images comparing the iPhone 4's camera components with purported iPhone 5 (or iPhone 4S) camera components.

The alleged iPhone 5 camera components show that the rear camera does not come with a flash attached as it does in the iPhone 4. These images in addition to the earlier iPhone 5 case suggests that the next iPhone will indeed sport minor hardware tweaks. Last week Apple.pro posted more images of a next-generation iPod nano with a rear camera and they were the first to post an image of a small touchscreen that later made its way into the sixth-generation iPod nano.

So you're basing this supposition on a grainy little rumor mill photograph?

We have no part numbers, we have no camera part specifications. The fact that these casings look near-identical only means that they come from the same manufacturer. Maybe even the same model line, with less of a step-down in megapixels from back to front. Just because it's smaller doesn't mean it's inferior hardware.

Y'know, camera upgrades are the reason I have upgraded through every iphone generation. I just can't get enough of iOS photography. Just last night I was wandering around my yard taking pics of flowers in the dark. If you use Camera+ and put the flash in flashlight mode, a bit of tinkering with focus lock and white balance can achieve a perfect shot of a flower, surrounded by blackness. I got a few shots where dew on grass in the background is glowing, but the grass itself is invisible. The effect is like a flower floating in a star filled sky. Everyone I show it to thinks it must be photoshopped. I am hoping the separate flash will make the white balance easier to control, cause at this point it can be difficult to keep whites from blowing out in a dark environment.

Binja, your pictures sound amazing. I'd love to see them, you should be so kind as to post a link. I especially want to see the glowing dew effect. We don't even get dew in this bone-dry desert where I live.

A mist bottle will do it for ya. What ya gotta do is bring along several different flashlights and a partner to hold them. Have your partner slowly move the flashlights around while you just snap away. I've found that those little LED keychain lights that they sell at convenience stores provide just the low light that you need to keep the background from becoming visible. Bright lights are your enemy. Try all the different colors they sell, cause it has a huge effect. The most important thing to remember is not to be afraid to go nuts firing away on that shutter button. Usually I'll fire off about 300 shots and then go into a fit of deleting till I end up with 5 or 10 good shots. iOS photography is all about happy accidents.

There are only three apps you need to own. Camera+, TiltShift Generator, and ColorSplash. All three of them have good competitors, but those three are the best. Oh, and being in a desert, you'll probably want Pano too.

They better be doing more than changing the location of the flash or this could be the end of iPhone supremacy. I'd hate to see Android OS take over, but without the next iPhone being a significant upgrade in form factor and features, by next year many rabid iPhone proponents like myself will be shopping for android phones. Please Apple don't disappoint with the next iPhone!

Why is front and rear facing camera EXACTLY the same?

The cable is different but the actual size of the lens/housing is the exact same as the front facing camera of the iPhone 4.

I can probably assume that one is actually the iPhone 4's facetime camera, one is the iPad 2's and one is the iPod touch 4's? Because there is no way that rear-camera for the "iPhone 5" is real, or decent.

True or not, I'm not sure putting the flash else where is a good idea. Taking a picture in landscape with both hands will cause a few problems. Fingers will cover either camera or flash.

Uh, it's not at all smaller. The big silvery thing you see is the casing for the flash. The camera is actually underneath that silvery thing.

Hmmm... Means nothing, the flash could still be in the exact same spot.
