1080p camera sensor could be in the next iPhone, iPad, iPod touch
As Engadget reports, OmniVision Technologies, Apple's supplier of CMOS sensors for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, has unveiled a 5 MP camera sensor that is capable of recording 1080p video. The sensor, named OV5690, is thin enough to fit in the iPod touch and iPad -- unlike the current 5 MP OmniVision CMOS sensor, which will only fit in the iPhone 4's body.
The OV5690 sensor would be a huge boon to the iPad and iPod touch, whose cameras are currently capped at less than 1 MP and shoot video in 720p. As for the next iPhone, the OV5690 sensor would definitely fit in it, but that would mean the iPhone's camera resolution would be limited to 5 MP -- the current resolution of the iPhone 4. There have been plenty of rumors floating around that the next iPhone will sport at least an 8 MP camera. But if Apple wanted to go more than 8 MP and offer users the ability to shoot in 1080p they could, as MacStories notes. In January OmniVision introduced a 10 MP camera sensor that shoots in 1080p and would fit in the iPhone 4's body.

The latest iPhone in the market is a subject of discussion. As a center of attraction it has drawn various conclusions, and logical talks. In simple and clear manner, I would like to state that apple iPhones are designed in the most effective manner which meets entire consumer need. Current market is surrounded by 1080 camera sensor talk in iPhone as well as 8 megapixels to be seen soon. But thatâs just the talk and the fact can only be revealed when apple launches its iPhone device with updated configuration.

1080p in a cellphone? I hope they upgrade the storage minimum, because that will suck up space for a quality different that very few will really notice. It's really hard to see the difference between 720p and 1080p, and even harder when it's being run through a decent upscaler. I can tell the difference thanks to an eye honed by hundreds of hours editing, but even I don't care about the marginal difference when I'm just shooting casually. Even with professional cameras, a better lens being captured at 720p will still look better than a crappy lens captured at 1080p.

Rear facing camera is for augmented reality.
More MP => better picture quality all other things wing equal - takingnanhigh res RAW, noise reducing it and then reducing resolution could provide great low light pictures.
I would much rather that any new camera keeps a sensible resolution (5MP is absolutely fine) and concentrates on improving performance in low-light situations so that I don't need to use either a crappy flash or put up with a noisy mess.
I also still don't understand what a rear-facing camera is doing on the iPad.
Here's a spare apostrophe: '
Put that between the 4 and the s in "iPhone 4's" and you will have the possessive, not the unreleased model "iPhone 4S" or the plural.
8MP + small sensor = bad pictures. 5MP with same small sensor, still 1080p = better pictures. Sensor is all, MP are mostly a marketing scheme.

It's just going to be a big file size that's going to eat up your 16, 32 or 64 GBs in no time, take forever to upload, be sluggish to edit on an old Macbook or Air, and you're just going to upload it to 'tube in 480p in the end anyway. 720p even seemed a bit much to me. Just give me a camera that looks top notch at standard def, good in low light, etc. I don't need a megapixel-type war.
