App Store approvals frozen on in-app purchase products? [Updated x2]

Update 1:45 PM ET: We're hearing the issue may be resolved and the service restored. If you're a developer who was affected by the account lock, try again and let us know what happens.

---

We've now heard this from multiple developers, so it's clear that something's a bit out of whack in the App Store approval process for applications that use in-app purchasing.

As a matter of policy, Apple requires developers to test in-app purchases (IAP) with a test user account before the application in question can be approved. Unfortunately, this test account has been offline for a week now the ability for developers to create test accounts has been offline for a week now with no word as to why. If you are a developer, you can see the relevant thread on Apple's own developer forums here.

Could it be that approvals/account creations are being quietly suspended while Apple's lawyers investigate the Lodsys patent claim, which directly relates to in-app purchase capabilities? Or is this a maintenance issue, and the specificity of the block for apps that use IAP is just a coincidence? We've asked for clarification and will let you know if we hear from Apple.

Until then, developers may be unable to get approval for any apps that use an in-app purchasing mechanism. Here's hoping this gets fixed soon.

Update 12:15 PM ET: While some developers with pre-existing test accounts for IAP have been able to submit their apps using those accounts, it's not clear whether the apps are actually getting all the way through the approval process. At least one commenter on the Developer Forums notes that his app that includes IAP is in an odd limbo: it was approved more than 36 hours earlier, but despite an iTunes Connect status of "Ready for Sale," it's not showing up in the store ("this item is unavailable" on link). To be sure, none of these are necessarily conclusive evidence of deliberate action on Apple's part to suspend IAP-related app approvals.

There is a worse aspect to this too. We have an update (hopefully!) coming out soon for Great Little War Game (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/great-little-war-game-hd/id426392350?mt=8&ls=1).

It's a good update with lots of free extra stuff and also another iap campaign pack that people have been crying out for.

However, there is also a bug fix in this release that fixes a corrupted map problem in a later level. That map is still playable but it looks a bit crappy and is not what players have a right to expect. But now because we have some good iap, we can't get it fixed? :s

Won't it be funny if Apple just didn't happen to notice that this part of the system went down until it was brought to light by TUAW this morning? It's not like it hasn't happened before, and we know they watch TUAW, since it's the pulse of the community.

I wish Apple would at least address the issue.

For those who want to check their IAPs without a test account, go for SimStoreKit @github : https://github.com/millenomi/simstorekit

It won't help you in the approval process but at least you won't be stuck in the testing of your app. And also you'll get rid of all those headaches trying to use the sandbox...

Did I get lucky? My In-App Purchase was approved yesterday and available in app store today:

Is it possible that only certain types of purchases are blocked (the patent was aimed at product upgrade, not so much the consumable goodies)?

Urashid - I'm not sure what we are / aren't allowed to say as developers... but I think some IAP apps could still be approved, so long as they were already well along in their development before this problem appeared (I have no idea if this is a bug, or an intentionally offline system). What I know for sure is that NO developer can create a Test User at this time, and it's been that way for > 1 week (no test user account = no way to deploy in app purchasing).

So, it's a serious situation that impairs or in many cases completely blocks IAP apps. Hard to say what the reasoning is behind Apple's silence. As you can see on the linked thread, there are dozens of angry developers complaining loudly about it.

Thanks dylanm. It all makes more sense now. Last week I had trouble creating the test user account for IAP, but assumed it was some config error. I ended up testing the IAP with an old test account which was still active.

I had noticed that there didn't seem to be quite as many app updates over the past few days. Maybe since Thursday last week. Hadn't quite put it together that it was related to the patent trolling.
