Happy 10th anniversary Apple Stores

Today marks the 10th anniversary of Apple's retail stores. On May 19, 2001 the very first store opened in McLean, Virginia, followed later that same day by a store in Glendale, California. Even though the McLean store opened first, the Glendale store carries the designation "001," causing a bit of controversy among statistics-friendly nerds.

Today the number of Apple Stores has grown to over 300 around the world, as our unofficial retrospective illustrates. Earlier this week, rumors suggested that Apple's got something special planned to mark the anniversary, though we haven't seen anything official yet.

Congratulations to Apple on this achievement. Here's to 10 more successful years.

Ha, I used to work across the hall from the Tysons Apple store when it opened. Great way to check email during the day. Got my first Mac there as well.

I remember when these stores first opened. Apple was opening stores at about the same time Gateway was closing all of theirs. A lot of people were predicting that the Apple stores would fail BIG time, that Apple was making a hugh mistake by opening them.
Now 10 years later: Apple has over 300 stores worldwide along with the best Customer Satisfaction in the entire industry. They focus of making the customer happy and it has worked. Apple took a hugh chance and it paid off.
Congrats Apple!

*Huge. You don't want to make Hugh upset, now (you wouldn't like him when he's angry). The first time I thought it was a typo, but the second time around I realized something's wrong.
