Is it possible? AT&T drops lower in customer satisfaction survey

It's a bit of a surprise. AT&T has dropped below Sprint in consumer ratings, at least according to the American Customer Satisfaction Index, as reported by the Associated Press. Both T-Mobile and AT&T are ranked at the bottom, which makes you wonder about the wisdom of the announced sale of T-Mobile to AT&T. Think of the fun customers will have as the two worst companies on the list merge accounting systems and networks. Consumer Reports also ranks AT&T the worst of the cellular carriers.

Sprint and Verizon both get a score of 72 in the survey, which was done by polling 8,000 households in the first quarter of the year. AT&T is at the bottom with a score of 66, down 3 points from last year. T-Mobile scores a 70, also down 3 from a year ago.

At first glance I would have thought there would be some improvement in the AT&T score. We've been reporting on problems for years, and AT&T says it has spent millions in upgrades and says it has been trying to fill in the coverage gaps. What's your experience? Is AT&T getting better or worse, and if you made the jump to Verizon, are you happier?

Every carrier has dead spots, every carrier has outages, every carrier has dropped calls. Every carrier has bad customer service, because every carrier's customers are already angry when they first call the customer service rep.

AT&T provides premium service that other carriers can't match. While on a conference call the other day, I was chatting on IM with another person on the call. Had a couple of calendar invitations pushed out. Could have checked my email or fired up my Mac if I'd wanted to. Try that on Verizon or Sprint.

Is it less reliable? Possibly. Does it degrade less gracefully than other carriers? Maybe. But you get extra value with AT&T. Most customers don't need or appreciate that value, and thus they only see AT&T's extortionate pricing (of which there's no doubt).

As long as I stay away from technology conferences, I'm happy. But I also like Delta for flying, which many people seem to have a problem with...

AT&T gave me a micro cell box to improve my connection in home. It sometimes takes over a minute to connect when I try to make a call. Half of the time, I get a connection failure. Thanks AT&T! Now I have 4 bars of crappy service.

In the Long Island area (and I travel ALL OVER) it has been getting much better. I don't drop nearly as much now that I'm sure a boatload of people jumped ship to Verizon. I still think the iPhone 4 stinks for calls when compared with the 3GS. We have all models in the office and the 4 is far and away the worst for dropped calls. I can't say that I'm disappointed with AT&T in any way though.

AT&T has been getting progressively worse in Wichita. I have a great signal where ever I go but I get 10x the dropped calls that I had when I was on Verizon and the data seems to be by luck at best. There are some areas that it works great and others I cant even load the google search page.

It really comes down to the coverage in your area. In upstate SC att has great coverage and 3-4 times faster 3G speed than Verizon and Sprint. At least iPhone users have some choice now.

I've used Mark the Spot countless times to complain to AT&T about poor coverage at my home in Central Oregon. AT&T has not improved its poor coverage. I also live in Honolulu, HI, where AT&T coverage is tolerable.

I plan to move to Verizon when my AT&T contract expires.

Have had AT&T for a long time (NY and DC area) have not had issues with their service and have been best in the locations that I use them. I tend to think that there is something wrong in this survey as I can not understand the quick drop of T Mobile when it has ranked on top. This is for sure contrary to other surveys.

Here in Iowa, AT&T coverage was spotty and I moved to Verizon first with Droid now with iPhone 4 and could not be happier. When I got iPad 2 3G I got the AT&T version for international use, and the reception issue is stark. In rural areas, Verizon gives me multiple bars of 3G while the AT&T is at zero to no bars. The iPad only gets good coverage in Des Moines. What always got to me was AT&T's take it or leave it attitude on the customer service side.

I have had the same service for 11yrs now. I started my service with pacbell, kept it through the name change to Cingular, and was excited when Cingular and AT&T merged... I actually sold phones for both at&t and Cingular many years before the merger. I have never had much to complain about and have defended my service for years up till just recently. Since 2000 I have always seen major improvements to pacbell/Cingular/AT&T service until the past couple years. There have always been dead spots, you just new you weren't gonna get reception in specific areas but it never really impacted me. Now, my phone may show 3-4 bars of 3G reception but a call will drop or can't connect to begin with, or the data is obnoxiously slow. I've used at&ts "mark the spot" app too many times and have seen no real changes anywhere. AT&T says they are putting all this $ into their network but all I see is things getting worse. The only reason I haven't jumped ship is cause of convenience and unlimited data on my iPhone. I hope they get their stuff together, and I hope they do it real soon!
