Apple's interactive iPad displays -- a video of one in action

Yesterday we told you that Apple Stores across the globe have swapped their paper signage with interactive iPad displays. The new iPad displays allow shoppers to view product information, compare products and even call Apple Store employes to customers who need assistance. As always, with anything interactive, it's better to see it than read about it, so check out the video on the next page that was sent to us by Graham of Glasshouse Apps.

Here's a better video in HD, showing iPhone prices are calculated:

Apple stores - ya gotta love 'em! Any weekday mid-morning in the mall you'll find it - just look for the people. And now most of those people will get an informal introduction to an iPad even if they are there to check out a Mac Pro. There's method to Apple's madness!

Extra information is nice...but I agree the real goal is to have more shoppers touch and USE the iPads. Familiarity!

Well, I for one thought they were pretty useful. My wife was shopping for a new mac and while she worked the keyboard and mouse on a new Mac mini, she had me reading off specs and such on the iPad. And I could give her updates as we watched the queue tick down on the "Call Assistant" feature.

That it serves the additional purpose of providing interaction with and advertising for their mobile platforms makes the idea all the better.

They were having some issues this morning according to the guy that eventually came to us. Sunday is their busiest day and today was there first go with the system. According to our assistant, they were still having issues figuring out which iPad/computer station the request had come from.

Overall, seems like a pretty good idea to me - like the old flipbook things with specs and such attached below computers and printers at the big box stores sometime back only more functional AND able to summon help when you need it.

Do you think they have battery? Maybe firmware is not the only mod since battery is useless in a "always plugged" context...

If you look at them, you can see the dock connector isn't plugged in. The hardware has definitely been modded because the cable runs right up into the middle of the back of the iPad, right about where the Apple logo would be.

iPad are by their very nature interactive.

This Apple Store 2.0 business is laughable. There are so many media whores out their pimping this non-story it's sickening.

Actually, I just realized this video doesn't show the whole thing. All of those icons around the product pictures on the screen can be tapped to bring up info about each specific feature. Like, you can tap the Thunderbolt icon for more info on Thunderbolt, and you can tap the LED icon for more info about the available screens, etc.
