Building a homemade "iPad 3"
Some folks are talented and build interesting gadgets in their spare time. Take, for example, the man who spent two weeks building a white tablet he calls the iPad 3. He handpicked all the parts and assembled the device into a functioning tablet, complete with a stuck-on Apple logo.
Sadly, he chose Windows XP for the OS, which makes the logo and iPad 3 name seem a bit awkward. Like others before him, he filmed the project from start to finish and published it as a time-lapse video for the world to see. Geeky folks not put off by the Microsoft influence should read on and check out the video.

I admire this guys talent and willingness to design. He probably made it for fun as a project to better develop his skills. He is the Chinese Tony Stark.

It's just an old HP slate which foreshadowed the iPad by several years, running WinXP with Tablet extensions. It uses a stylus instead of a touch screen, and it doesn't run iOS, but that's better for my uses than an iPad would be, because I use it for illustration work. I rarely interact with Windows; it just runs Safari, Photoshop, Manga Studio, and OpenOffice (to read the comics scripts I'm illustrating), with Dropbox synching back to my Linux file server for storage, making it a great portable adjunct to my iMac.. I wish it were as light as an iPad, but the fact that I can't play Super Monkey Ball on it is a productivity booster. Most of the illustration work for for this comic was done on it: http://fetuschrist.holycomics.com/?p=70

May 27 2011 at 7:31 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyBut why XP? If anything maybe OS X or even Linux. I can't believe people still use such an old operating system. He might as well have used Windows 3.11.

It's probably the single most commonly-used OS on the planet.

Apple have taken the kid to court who was selling the white iPhone 4 conversion kits.. they claim he infringed their copyright or something as he was supplying the conversion kits with the apple logo and other identifying makrs that actual apple products come with...
That's because the kid was selling them, and had a market for it, to boot. Mister Micgadget, on the other hand, couldn't give this thing away.

May 26 2011 at 3:00 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI wouldn't run XP on *anything* let alone anything with an Apple logo on it.

May 26 2011 at 4:26 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI said I wouldn't run it, not that I wouldn't accidentally use it ;)
May 26 2011 at 4:30 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhat a fantastic invention! I will call it a "Tablet PC"!
Seriously, this is the dumbest thing I've seen in a while. Next on TUAW: guy rubs two sticks together and makes fire.
This is one reason why iPad is so popular. You really can't make (a good) one yourself. The "I can build a pee cee for two hundred bucks" crowd will need to waste their time elsewhere.
