Dear Aunt TUAW: Help me stream my music

Dear Aunt TUAW,

Do you know an app that streams music from Mac to iOS? I hear that Apple's iCloud is going to do this but I don't want to pay $25 a year.

Your loving nephew,

Ivo

Dear Ivo,

Auntie supposes we'll all learn on Monday about Apple's new streaming service iCloud, as MobileMe's happy blue iDisk cloud gets all steel-ified and Apple starts making use of its massive North Carolina data storage megaplex.

But yes, there are other solutions. Matt Gallagher's StreamToMe lets you send music stored on your Mac or PC to a remote iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. Supported formats include MP4, MP3, AAC, and WMA.

Your system must be set up to be remotely accessible, and you need to install a special application called ServeToMe whose job it is to access, transcode, and send data.

StreamToMe costs $2.99 on App Store and the server component is free.

Hugs,

Auntie T.

If nephew Ivo doesn't mind pulling instead of pushing, he can save $2.99 and just launch the iPod app on his iOS device, then touch the header, "Library" in the left most column of the home page. If he has any shared libraries on his wireless network, they will show up. Touch the name of the shared network that has the music he wants to listen to, and after a few seconds, all of the stored music, podcasts, audiobooks, purchased items, etc. will be available. The list will even show any iTunes playlists. Easy Peazy!

Another vote for Audiogalaxy. Free and streams perfectly to any iOS device or Mac connected to the interwebs.

If the rumors are true and iCloud does cost $25/yr after the free trial, that is ONLY $0.068 per day. Are people really going to complain about $0.07? If it is integrated well into iOS and does what it should, the $25 is completely worth it.

One more option: this one is a bit old, and it requires a bit of manual setup, but it still works and it's free. http://pixelcity.com/iphone-streaming-music/ It has the usual difficulties of getting your music working outside your house, but inside, it's great. Advantages: you're not depending on a third-party company to get at your music, and for local use, it's super-fast because it comes straight from your Mac, not elsewhere on the Web.

I know this thread is about streaming from Mac to iOS, but does anyone know if Erica Sadun is going to keep updating BananaTunes to stream iOS to Mac? I really liked that feature, but apparently it was only a limited-time beta and now it no longer works. :-( Please keep BananaTunes running Erica! I love it and miss it!

Plex (http://plexapp.tv/) isn't just for music, it does videos as well (live transcoding FTW)! It runs as a server for free on OSX, Linux, and Windows, and has an inexpensive client iOS and Android app, as well as free Windows and OSX clients. There's even an Apple TV jailbreak app!

You can also use Audiogalaxy http://www.audiogalaxy.com/ on your Mac to share your music, then install the free app on your iOS device.

Wow, talk about jumping the gun. Pricing wasn't even announced and people are looking for alternatives to a nonexistent service based on its rumored cost?

Or you could use iOS' new built in home sharing capability which is hassle free and easy to set up.
Hop into settings-> music/iPod and enable homesharing. be sure it is turned on on your Mac or PC too.
To do so, go to Edit-> Preferances -> Sharing and share your entire library.
Then on your device go to iPod/Music -> More -> Shared and there you will have your Library. From your Computer.
Auntie Emile is happy to be of help haha!

or you could just use audiogalaxy, the server app & iOS apps are both free. set it up, point it at your music folder & stream to your heart's content! doesn't get any better than that.
