iOS 5 jailbroken already

iOS 5 has been jailbroken within 24 hours of its debut in the iOS dev center. According to iOS hacker MuscleNerd, the exploit uses limera1n and is a tethered boot on the iPod touch fourth generation at this time. Cydia installs fine and seems to work without issue. This achievement is good news for devs who are rocking iOS 5 and those looking forward to the release version of iOS which should land this fall.

The breathless "already" included in such headlines adds to the evidence that TUAW and most tech press is surprisingly nontechnical.

It should be obvious -- but apparently isn't -- that Apple isn't going to put improved jailbreak protection in development releases of the OS because the general public doesn't have it installed and won't until this Fall; putting the actual security changes into the development version just gives the jailbreak community all of that time to figure out how to break the security that Apple will actually use. The fact that someone was able to use an existing exploit "within 24 hours!" isn't in any way news, and certainly isn't impressive.

Over-the-air OS updates are going to have a significant impact in reducing jailbreaking once iOS 5 is public: if someone figures out a way to keep that painlessly jailbroken while staying updated then there will be something to report.

Big deal! Once again, TUAW serves as the unofficial press agent for iPhone hackers.

As long as jailbreaking the dev version doesn't delay the release of the public product, then go ahead...do your little jailbreaky thing.

I jailbroke my iPhone 3G, and within about a week it kept "crashing". Some sort of big notification that the shell or something or other crashed or failed or...something. That never seems to happen with my un-jailbroken phones.

Like one reader below said. Great...so you can have animated wallpaper? Or clutter up your home and lock screen with a bunch of pointless info? I know, I know..."we should have control over our devices blah blah blah...". I'd like to not be subjected to having to install version 4.3.x every time some clown named p4n7sXp10s10n decides to get his nerd on. If jailbreaking is legal, why is it done by "hackers" using "exploits"?

I have asked before, but with iOS5 it seems more relevant...

What exactly is jailbreaking gaining you here? You can have an animated wallpaper?

Interesting, but how will the incremental, over-the-air updates affect the jailbreak? With my 3GS contract about to expire, I'm wondering if I'm better off getting an iPhone4 now. I'll know for sure that I'll have the current 4.3.3 jailbreak and could upgrade to ios 5 if there aren't any jailbreak problems with it. My other concern is that the iPhone 5 will be harder to jailbreak, seeing that the iPad 2 still hasn't been jailbroken. Do I get an iPhone 4 now (and take advantage of Walmart's current deal) or do I wait for the iPhone 5???

Sigh...
Why do sites keep posting this?! Specially Apple oriented once (That should know the facts below)
It's not news, the limera1n exploit used for all current devices except the iPad 2 is a bootrom exploit, it can't be fixed and will work on all iOS version ever to be released on the devices effected by the exploit...
