NBC's The Voice will use iTunes purchases as votes

The Voice is an NBC reality talent show that lets singers compete for US$100,000 and a recording deal with Universal Republic Records. Like other reality shows, The Voice lets viewers vote for their favorite contestants by phone, through the NBC Live app, and online at NBC.com. A new twist in the rules will also let people vote with their wallet by counting a vote every time someone buys the artist's song on iTunes.

Admittedly, some votes will be accidentally cast by iTunes users who are buying out of pleasure and not for voting reasons, but NBC and Universal Media Studios don't seem to mind. They seem happy with the new voting scheme which links sales to popularity and generates extra money for all involved.

As if reality shows are worth something to watch? Sorry but Dana Gould has the best description of reality tv:

“My wife loves reality shows, like Real Housewives of New Jersey or whatever it is. I cannot be in the room. It drives me insane. I had this realization one day. Ok, you’re watching people that are not actors in phony situations created by people that are not writers. And the non-actors are second guessing how they think you would like to see them behave were the situation genuine, which it isn’t. And you are passively observing this. You’re technically not even alive at this point. You are watching an amateur production of nothing. If you add one more layer to it, the fabric of reality will tear.”

On the other hand contest shows _are_ popularity contests and always will be. So don't expect more out of it.

It's been proven multiple times, across all kinds of reality shows, that the audience at home always get the vote wrong. Reality shows that allow their fans of the show to vote is just 1 of the many reasons the majority dislike reality shows. When you have a show where teenage girls with jealously complexes can vote a contestant off because they are jealous of the way the contestant looks, or is appreciated, makes that show worthless to watch.
