UAE carrier Etisalat said 4G iPhone 5 will ship this year, now unsaid (Updated)

Update: Etisalat must have gotten some cranky calls from Apple's carrier relations team, because the company has officially denied any mention of an upcoming iPhone model. SaudiMac reports that a blog post from the carrier now insists "At no point did Etisalat confirm that any new iPhone device will be launched in 2011." Thanks to @mazmohad and @khaled for the heads-up.
Dubai's Gulf News is reporting that United Arab Emirates-based carrier Etisalat is in talks with Apple to sell a 4G iPhone 5 later this year. Ali Al Ahmad, Chief Corporate Communication Officer of Etisalat told the Gulf News, "Yes, we are in talks with most smartphone manufacturers including Apple on the rollout of the 4G handset, iPhone 5 later this year. As the first telecom organization to roll out the 4G network, LTE, in the Middle East, we have already started talking to them for the handsets and chipsets in them."
However, despite Ahmad's assertion on an LTE iPhone 5 later this year, readers should approach this news with caution. Right now there are no solid facts about the next iPhone. The next iPhone will be the fifth-generation iPhone, but no one can even agree on its name, let alone the telecommunications technology it will have.
Some say the fifth generation iPhone will be called the "iPhone 4S," while others say it will be known as the "iPhone 5." However, regardless of the name, there are rumors that the iPhone won't see 4G LTE until the sixth generation iPhone (which could very well be called the "iPhone 5"). It's entirely possible that carrier executives like Ahmad could be confusing the version and name with associated telecommunications technology.
But at the risk of fanning the flames, it's also possible that Apple could roll out a 4G LTE-equipped iPhone in the fall. The company is pushing back the new iPhone hardware launch later this year than in the past and the extra time could provide the wiggle room to wait until there are enough 4G chips ready in a slim enough form factor to fit the next generation iPhone without compromising its design -- something current 4G chips can't do.

It seems I’m as stoked about the next generation iphone as the next guy, but there is, as always, the twinge of fear as we all wait to see if Apple will manage to once again top itself and keep true to its hard-earned reputation as the innovative epicentre of modern society. Yet as Apple gets ready to release 15 million devices through the upcoming season, I can’t help but wonder if the grandiose investment is well calculated. Personal paranoia aside though, I did come across a pretty interest article on a similar topic the other day and think that it’s something you may find pretty interesting as well. Either way, it’s a fun read in case you run out of free fliers during morning coffee: http://www.pressdisplay.com/pressdisplay/showlink.aspx?bookmarkid=FT3EK9QESE12&preview=article&linkid=c657c984-5253-4674-9cad-7fa62ffb1b05&pdaffid=ZVFwBG5jk4Kvl9OaBJc5%2bg%3d%3d
P.S. If you’re having cappuccino, leave some for me. Half cream, no sugar :P
I'm a huge iPhone and Apple fan, but I have to admit that, with all of the new 4G phones coming to market, if Apple doesn't release a LTE/4G iPhone (no B.S. HSUPA+ 4G), they are going to stand to lose major market-share. I would think this is why they have opted for a August/Sept. refresh.............at least I hope! Worse case, they need to release a LTE upgradable iPhone. I guess time will tell!?!

Apple could easily be trying to keep this hush because they might be actually releasing a "4G" wireless phone. I am still very disappointed no new iPhone 5 (or 4S, whatever the hell it is) was announced at WWDC. LG, MOTO and Samsung are releasing some awesome phones.
I agree with this article: http://bit.ly/mHLUd2
APPLE PLEASE ANNOUNCE THE IPHONE 5 IN THE FALL! Do not delay, do not hesitate. HTC Inspire is starting to grow on me....
an iphone 5 cant be a 6th generation iphone, otherwise it would be a 6g iphone, the iphone 4g is a 4th generation iphone and a 4gs iphone if one comes out is just an advanced model of the 4th generation iphone. the iphone 3gs isnt a 4th generation iphone its an advanced model of the 3rd generation iphone!!! giving me the sh!ts !!!!

June 12 2011 at 12:11 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyTaking into account all the rumors out there I supposes no one can be sure. But we do know that in iOS5 there now mention of the ipod touch. With that said there is a rumor that the new iPhone will be both CDMA and GSM. Makes sense for Apple. One phone low manufacturing costs. You take that with the rumored September release and perhaps it is because they are just going to rename the iPod touch the iPhone wifi version like they have with iPads. This would make everything make sense. There are two iPhones listed in iOS5 one can assume its for the CDMA version and a GSM version. But if they are making a world phone then it can be Wifi and cellular versions instead. Makes sense. As to LTE I don't think so. Apple wouldn't compromise battery life. Plus while everyone agrees that LTE is the future there really aren't any networks yet. THey are just beginning developement, Next year will be a much better time for a 4G iPhone.

No way in hell, that the new iPhone is going to be called the "iPhone 4S" I don't know how this ridiculous logic got into everyone's head, especially now that WWDC has passed. Here is why it will NOT be the iPhone 4S:
1) Originally the "4S" was coined to invoke a smaller update which would hold only marginal hardware updates, similar to the iPhone 3GS. However given that the iPhone is likely going to be released in September (during the iPod Touch release slot) the extra time seems to point to a more "proper" update (at least in the way Apple is going to present it). There is no way that apple could justify breaking its release schedule (without any mention or justification) and holding off/not releasing a ipt5, if it was only just a speed boost/better camera.
2) Why would apple after finally making its way back to position where the device name could match the generation choose to break that? What advantage would it serve? The only reason the iPhone 3G and 3GS had the "3G" in the name was to emphasize the 3G network which was emerging as a new(ish) technology. In this case it is not likely that Apple is going to call the device the 4G, since there is already a phone called the 4, which is often (incorrectly) called the iPhone 4G. Additionally despite this articles claims, there is no evidence (other than hearsay) to support that the new device will have a LTE Chip. Most Carriers are still in the developing stages, and it will take much much longer before "4G" is a widespread technology. Apple will likely defer this until next year (its a waste of a feature if most people cant really use it)
3) The iPhone 4S name would directly contradict iOS5. It seems silly to me to have a your Firmware version be a full number higher than your hardware. There would be no way to fix this in the future without delaying a software update, or releasing two generations during the same firmware. Either of these options seems HIGHLY unlikely at best.
4) Use some common sense, i mean really, Everything points to the device being called iPhone 4G, OR (the much more likely) iPhone 5. "4S" would be confusing to many consumers, and would take away from the impact of the device. Apple does not want the phone to be perceived as a minor update (like the 3GS), ESPECIALLY since they JUST released the White iPhone...
That being said I believe that the iPhone 5 will NOT support LTE. 3G networks, especially on AT&T, are fast enough and often faster than other carriers "4G" networks. But as always we will have to wait to find out. However I am tired of every tech website running any rumor that will pass, and making claims without even the slightest bit of logic- I assure you that Apple does not disclose information without being certain that it will not be leaked in such a careless way. If this information /is/ true, I doubt they'll get away without some form of repercussion.
How about Apple putting in a LTE radio and allowing each carrier to unlock the LTE service where applicable? I don't know? However, they are going to be way behind the LTE/4G bandwagon if they wait until next fall to release one. LTE doesn't have to be in full maturation for them to take advantage of it. They can always allow people to turn off 4G if the service isn't available or killing their battery. That's what everyone else is doing. I cannot thing of any other reason to delay the new iPhone launch by 2-3 months. Only time will tell. Here's to a iPhone 4G or iPhone 5!
