Almost half of iOS developers surveyed also code for Android

Slightly less than half of iOS developers surveyed at WWDC also write applications for Android, a little over a third also code for BlackBerry devices and 36% focus only on iOS. These figures and more come from a Piper Jaffray survey of 45 iOS developers at WWDC.

Besides platform preferences, the survey also reveals the following:

  • 100% of developers write apps for the iPhone and 93% write for the iPad
  • only 7% of developers code for the Mac
  • 100% believe that iOS is the best platform for monetization
  • 100% believe iOS is the easiest platform for development
  • 51% of developers think iOS has the highest potential for growth, 41% believe in Android
  • 38% of iOS developers dislike Apple's strict limitations

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster points to the results of this survey as evidence that Apple's dedicated and talented developers are one of its most valuable assets.

c'mon. this "survey" was done by Gene Munster, who, if you havent figured it out by now, is known for purposely using inappropriately small sample sizes only to create the headline he's after. all financial analysts are douches, but this guy is as worthless as an unscented, water-soluble douchebag littered with holes.

financial analysts only blog to manipulate the portfolios they manage; by "blogging," it keeps them out of the eye of the SEC. the basis for this "survey" is probably because he's trying to stop the incessant bleeding of GOOG stocks in his accounts.

Statistically speaking, if the sample is representative, then the survey is good. However, I doubt it is, if you pick devs randomly from the crowd.

Thirty women named Helen agree: development for Android and iOS will soon stop, and everyone will migrate back to the Amiga.

Forty-five devs at Mecca, erm, I mean WWDC is not a realistically news-worthy survey.

Not true. If they were randomly selected and reflective of the population, then 45 developers should statistically reflect the opinions of a much larger body. I don't have time to do the math, but as an example, they routinely use surveys of ~1200 people to reflect the opinions of the entire nation (~300x10^5 people) on things like who should be president and "Is bacon delicious?"

Assume 100k developers, 45 devs will give you a confidence lever of 95% with an interval of 15.

Rough math, but not a useless survey. Be intellectually honest in your debates.

Almost half of iOS developers SURVEYED also code for Android.

"Surveyed" is the keyword here. This sample size is very small and means nothing.

Agreed. What TUAW left out, and I'm not indicating they left it out for any reason, is that the sample size is only FORTY-FIVE devs. That really doesn't mean a whole lot.

This source link lists that number. Kind of a meaningless poll for any sort of perspective when the sample is so low.

Take a statistics class. 45 people is not a small sample size if they are reflective of the larger group.

@jeremiah

Statistically speaking, I doubt WWDC attendees are representative of the developer community as a whole. They are, by far, the most dedicated of iOS devs or they wouldn't have paid the high fees of attendance.

Even if the sample size is fair, the sample group probably isn't very representative. Point is, there's plenty of reasons to doubt the accuracy of this poll.
