iOS 5 jailbreak offers third-party Notification Center widgets

Jailbreakers have already cracked iOS 5's Notification Center widgets, according to 9to5Mac. Notification screen widgets are little apps -- or widgets -- that run in the new Notifications Center in iOS 5. iOS 5 will ship with two widgets, stocks and weather. However, as usual, the jailbreak community wants to push things forward faster than Apple does, and they've already come out with a host of third-party widgets.

MacStories has an excellent roundup of some of those custom Notification Center widgets but, as always, if you want to use them you'll need to jailbreak your iPhone. One of my favorites is SpringPrefs (shown at right), which shows you details about your iOS system information, including the amount of free RAM, your Wi-Fi and Data IP addresses, and your firmware number.

the only widgets I really need are sms/text, missed calls, and twitter (other social media availability of course)

Its incredible how hard apple fights against the Jailbreaking community then steals all the good ideas they have. Next Apple will add sms quick reply and quick compose, just watch.

Rally can't believe how hard it can be for apple to realize that yes, widgets are actually useful! A wifi/Bluetooth button for instance, would be extremely handy. What's more: they keep dashboard running
In lion, which in comparisent, is a useless feature as opposed to what could have been in iOS.

No, they are not useful, they clutter your screen, most are ugly, and give you information you don't really need on your screen at all times. Widget in OSX hardly ever get used, gadgets in Windows get thrown to the side unless you are one of those people who enjoys making your desktop useless with senseless crap. Dashboard in Lion is a step towards phasing widgets out. Even Steve Jobs has said that. They are useless peices of information that take up valuable screen real estate. If you want them, go Android.

as someone who cuts on/off wifi and bluetooth very often i will have to very much disagree that those "widigets" would make a lot of peoples lives a lot easier.....digging through the settings 3 screens deep just to turn bluetooth on is obnoxious!!!! plus it would be nice to have a display brightness widget easily accessible for when you are outside and the display doesnt want to auto adjust like its supposed to.

I have a couple of widgets that are VERY useful, I use them often.

Widgets default to the Dashboard key or an icon in the Dock. The rest of the time they take up 0 screen realestate. That's the whole point!

I'm hoping that the final iOS 5 will allow widgets to be changed. I've never understood the obsession with stocks (are they really that important to the wider audience?) and the Apple Weather application looks nice but doesn't deliver very accurate forecasts in the UK. However, under no circumstance will I ever jailbreak my device, even if that means putting up with things that annoy.

How do you know that "iOS 5 will ship with two widgets, stocks and weather". Seriously, we are in beta 1...

Well unless Apple use different definitions for such terms beta usually means all the features are there, now they just need to make sure everything works as intended.

Thanks for leading me to believe i could do this right now. I jailbroke my device, saw nothing available, and then saw that you (and your source) are just linking to mockups on Dribbble. Nice job.

Mr Lizard

But as you're a developer (you have iOS 5) you can write your own!

That's not the crux of this article. I'm a paid developer who wanted to check out what this article led me to believe was available. I wasn't interested in spending my time developing stuff that others are clearly working on. Or, hell, who knows, maybe they aren't. Anyone can dicker around in Photoshop. This is why these types of articles are frustrating: the story is half-baked. Truth is, so is everything on Cydia.
