iOS 5 for iPad images suggest higher-resolution display

Although the displays on the iPad and iPad 2 are pretty darned nice, TUAW readers and bloggers alike have wished for a Retina Display-like screen on our magic tablets. Now a tipster at TechUnwrapped has pointed out that several images found in Newsstand -- an iOS 5 feature -- and the Twitter framework are suggesting a possible higher-resolution display for an upcoming iPad 3.

The screen resolution on existing iPads is 768 x 1024 pixels, and in previous versions of the iOS, SDK screen backgrounds and other images were sized accordingly. The tipster has found evidence of images at twice the size -- 1536 x 2048 pixels -- suggesting that the next generation of iPad might include a display with that resolution.

What do you think, TUAW readers? Will the iPad 3 come with double the resolution? Let us know in the comments.

Will it be able to play real-time 2k images? Highly unlikely. But if it could then everyone in the film industry will buy one.

I have the first iPad. I figured I would skip a generation, as the first one is still holding out pretty well. So a nicely upgraded iPad 3 will give me the incentive to upgrade.

Apple's next announcement window is September / October. (Many reasons for this, both historical and practical.)

So, either it's:

(a) iPhone 5 + iPod refresh in September/October.

(b) iPhone 5 + iPad 3 + iPod refresh in September/October

(c) iPhone 5 + iPod in Sep/Oct, iPad 3 early 2011.

I vote (c).

I think it's possible the iPod refresh has been moved, possibly to coincide with the iPad refresh. My reasoning is that Apple won't refresh the iPod Touch and iPhone at the same time, because they use too many of the same components and the same version of iOS.. Apple will have enough to do selling the new iPhone, keeping it in stock, and supporting the new cloud features with the iOS 5 roll out.

But it will still have 512MB to troll everyone.

The next one probably will be higher resolution, but it likely will still be a ways off. I never bought all the "iPad 3 in the fall" rumors, but chances are it'll still come out before iOS 6 does so it makes perfect sense to get iOS 5 ready for whatever features the iPad 3 might have. Just like how iOS 4.3 had the iCloud features in it, even though iCloud wasn't publicly available at the time.

I guess that's one cat Apple did not want out of the bag that soon... We were guessing it was coming at some point... but it's another thing to know it.

Now all the copycats (pun intended) will rush out to produce their own double-res xPads before Apple does. C'mon manufacturers, off you go.

Who says it has to be the onboard display? Couldn't that be an optional resolution for video out?

I definitely think that Apple is driving hard towards a higher-resolution display. However, I don't think that a new iPad is imminent, and it's silly to cram that many pixels into an iPhone-sized display. It seems much more likely that these images will be part of (an unannounced) Newsstand on the Mac App Store.

PS - that would be a factor of 4 - twice both height and width.
