AT&T will offer standard insurance for iPhone owners as of July 17th

According to MacRumors, iPhone owners may sign up for an Asurion Mobile Insurance plan for US$5 per month starting July 17th. The Insurance plan can be added to the handset within 30 days of purchase and may include a deductible.

The documentation on AT&T's website has not been updated to include the iPhone but similar handsets have a $125 replacement charge. This is a welcome change in plans for new iPhone owners as the previous insurance offering cost $12 per month and had a hefty $199 deductible.

Dear TUAW, tell your corporate overlords that most browsers don't render HTML entities in title tags. At the top of my window I see
"A T & a m p ; T will offer..."
(spaces added to help ensure that it renders like I want it to)

Actually the problem is it's been double encoded. All browsers will render entities correctly. IT's just the code right now reads "AT&T" which is clearly all kinds of wrong.

Hmmm... comment ate that. But hopefully it's clear what I meant - it's becoming munged into an invalid entity.

Why would I pay $245 for phone insurance to at&t when I could just buy an out of warranty repair/replacement service from Apple for $199 IF my phone breaks.

Too bad there isn't a monthly fee based applecare instead.

Last time I had I had phone insurance via AT&T was with my RAZR ('06 or '07?) and if memory serves, it could be added at any time. If I'm understanding this correctly you can now only add insurance if its within 30 days of the purchase date.

I take it that this is for a refurb replacement?

So, $120 over the life of the contract ($5/month x 24) plus $125 to actually replace the phone. That ends up being more than what Apple will charge you to fix a broken iPhone typically. I guess the real advantage is if you lose the device, but doesn't home/rental insurance usually cover things like this too?

Yup. I've got this coverage for my iPhone under my tenants policy, it's less than 15 a year and has $0.00 deductible. It will cover the cost of a replacement phone at the off contract / unlocked price whether I drop it, lose it, or it gets stolen. It's no different than insuring something like a wedding ring.
