Survey: iOS not taking much gaming audience from gaming consoles

Conventional wisdom says iOS is slowly chipping away at more traditional gaming devices like portable and home consoles, with even Nintendo admitting that Apple's handhelds are competition. But that role may be a little overstated, according to a new survey. Resolve Market Research found that after buying a tablet like the iPad, the percentage of customers who say they won't bother buying a portable gaming console or a traditional home console is falling, meaning that more people are thinking about owning a tablet and owning a completely separate device meant just for gaming.

As we've heard from elsewhere, laptops are the main target for tablet owners in terms of gaming, with dedicated e-readers also losing out to tablet devices for that function. But portable consoles like the Nintendo 3DS and Sony's upcoming PS Vita may have more of a life after iPad than previously thought. That doesn't mean that people aren't playing games on their tablets -- games are still one of the biggest categories in the App Store. Rather, it means that game time on the iPad isn't necessarily coming out of game time already being used up on traditional devices.

Although this is just one survey, it'll be interesting to see how free time and gaming attention gets divided up as people settle down into life with the iPad and other tablet devices. Traditional consoles may be more focused than all-purpose tablets, but that doesn't mean tablet users don't want to play games or be entertained sometimes.

I don't know why anyone would possibly think that iOS could in any serious way steal market share from consoles. if anything, people are buying iOS devices for the five minute "I'm bored while sitting in the waiting room" games, and not for serious stuff. I know for sure, that I wouldn't want to play a 35+ hour game like Mass Effect on an iPhone. It's supplementing the market, not owning it.

Also "conventional wisdom"? To whom, exactly is this wisdom "conventional"?

Conventional wisdom doesn't say that. conventional Apple fanboy wisdom says that. Heck, conventional Apple fanboy wisdom says that IOS is taking over toaster sales.

Just look at the top games sales...it's completely dominated by "keep the kids busy while you wait for your order to arrive" games. Not that I'm knocking those games, but those aren't the kind of games that console gamers play.

And for the "just wait 2 more years" crowd...I don't see that happening either anytime soon, unless Apple (or someone) can figure out a way to market an IOS game for more that $5, and be able to download many gigs of game data in a reasonable timeframe that a typical console game requires.

Its just too soon to be making these accusations it needs about 2 more years. The iPad and iPhone with an AppleTV will become the leader in the gaming market, however its just not ready yet. These devices are going change gaming when people can take their games with them and be able to stream their content on to their TV. If Apple can implement a bluetooth controller into the mix I can see even more reason to give up the dedicated gaming console and head to the new generation of entertainment everywhere initiative. We are seeing a glimpse of this with iOS5 but it probably won't be ready till iOS6or7 when all apps will be required to use Airplay and be able to stream at 1080p. Also Apple still needs to work out the streaming of iOS from device to AppleTV and they need to find a way to get the devices to fit the screen of what you are watching. It just needs more time......

This totally ignores sales of games. People might be buying more devices, but that doesn't mean their gaming budget is solely focused on handhelds and consoles.

This is stupid. The iPhone (or iPad) is not going to replace traditional console gaming. It's not the be all and end all of technology.

Poor title. The analysis shows iPad data while the topic suggests iOS in general. I would bet the iPhone / Touch numbers would make up, or come close to, the difference.

The younger crowd (DS kids, etc.) ARE killing off the Big 2.

I would buy a new console if it brought a benefit with it. We currently have a Wii and it gets about an hour of play a month these days.

The question, of course, is who commissioned the survey? There is such rampant corruption in the business world today that virtually no data of this sort can be trusted at face value. I also agree with Mr. Lizard that actual sales figures are far more relevant than some stupid survey.

I had a X-Box 360 and I never evert got the Red Light of Death. As long as you keep it somewhere that it has enough room for exhaust fans to blow the hot air out you'll be fine. Also the new generation X-Box slim is quitter at the same time.
